In between more rigorous discussions and spats, they had finally made it into the kitchen, managed to heat up the food that Eloise had cooked last night and somehow gotten through an entire dinner together.
Bucky kept refilling her wine, and Eloise kept trying to prod him with questions that seemed to make him uncomfortable. She even had a go at interrogating him about Steve's motives when it came to Peggy.
"So you're telling me, he's actually planning on coming back and asking her to marry him?" Eloise laughed loudly, exclaiming the statement like she was in disbelief.
"Yes!" Bucky laughed, seeming as if he was trying to convince her.
"Oh come on! They can't be serious" Eloise laughed. "She's met him twice!" She yelled.
"I know! I keep telling him. But he's...he's got his mind made up. He really is very in love with her" Bucky shrugged, using his fork to pick at some crumbs left on his plate.
"Soldiers die all the time you know...who says he'll make it back to propose?" Eloise sipped slowly. As soon as the words left her mouth she regretted it, the tension grew thick between them and she could see Bucky's eyes loose some of their sparkle.
"I'm sorry...I-" She began but he interrupted her almost immediately.
"He won't," He said arrogantly.
Eloise raised an eyebrow. "Is that so?" She tilted her head curiously. "How would you know, Sergeant?".
"I won't let anything like that happen to him" He responded sternly this time.
Eloise made a rather discreet connection.
"aah...I see." She nodded, putting her glass down.
Bucky nodded back, reached for the wine bottle and topped his glass off. He leaned over to hers and started to pour her a new glass.
"Trying to persuade me into something?" She giggled meanly.
Bucky stopped pouring and put the bottle down.
"Oh I don't need wine to persuade you into anything, doll". He chuckled arrogantly and took a long sip from his glass.
Eloise laughed out loud. "Oh please, come of it!" She spat at him.
"You must get very lonely. Just strolling about your every day entirely in isolation. Wake up in an empty apartment, go to work, walk home to an empty bed. An empty life. It must get so unbearingly lonely, only looking out for yourself. I bet that's why you're so mean" He argued back.
"Go ahead. Keep going." She leaned back in her chair crossing her arms. "Give it your best shot. Let's see if you can muster something I haven't heard before" She mocked.
Bucky looked at her for a second before laughing, taking another sip.
"I feel sorry for you" He whispered.
Eloise tensed up.
"Excuse me?" She leaned forward again.
"You heard exactly what I said" Bucky smiled at her, chuckling arrogantly.
Eloise was stunned. She was wracking her brain for the meanest, most venomous words she could possibly think of. But she was left with nothing.
"Out of things to say all of a sudden?" He mocked.
"....get out" She spat at him with a low growl.
The fact that he laughed made her even more infuriated.
Eloise got to her feet and headed straight for the balcony. She disappeared and came back with such urgency that Bucky didn't even have time to duck when she threw a pile of uniform right at his face.
