Sloane's breath was sucked from her lungs as she fell freely. Her arms waved and legs kicked frantically as she tried desperately to flip herself over. When she caught a glimpse of the ground rapidly approaching, she felt her stomach flip.
How did she get into this mess?
"Sloane,"
Her boss' voice spoke in her ear comm.
"Boss! Help me!"
"Sloane, someone is on their way, just hang tight."
"Hang tight to what? I'm free-falling!"
She screamed but her words weren't heard over the wind sounds.
Suddenly, a shadow was cast over her, forcing her to strain against the force of the fall to look above her. A parachute man reached for her.
Reaching as far as she could, their fingertips barely touched one another.
"Reach, Sloane. Come on!"
She stared at the man. Who was he?
Her fingertips barely touched his. Stretching her fingers as far as possible, his fingers finally gripped hers and pulled him down to her. Once he was close, she gripped his wrist and wrapped her arms and legs around him.
"This is not how I planned to meet you."
Sloane looked into the dark eyes of the man she held onto for dear life.
"Who are you?"
"I'm Lorcan. Your brother."
Her chest tightened and her breath was snatched for an entirely new reason.
A brother? She has a brother?
"I don't understand. I don't have a brother."
Lorcan smiled but avoided her eyes. He looked over her shoulder and reached back to yank the ripcord from his parachute, allowing it to open, and catch them in the wind.
The fall slowed dramatically, allowing Sloane to loosen her grip, but only slightly. Lorcan's grip tightened.
"I don't have a brother." She repeated.
"We'll talk more once we're on the ground."
Sloane was irritated with everyone putting her on hold. She deserved answers and wanted them now.
The ground rushed towards them and Sloane's hold on the man she had just met, the man claiming to be her brother, tightened.
"Boss, you'd better be on the ground when we get there."
"I'm ten minutes out but I'll be there." Her boss replied in her comms.
As soon as Lorcan's feet hit the ground, he buckled his knees slightly and took a few running steps.
Sloane, now on the ground, straightened her clothing and blew a puff of hair at the bangs sticking up in every direction. Pulling a hair tie from her pocket, she gathered her hair, smoothed it out as best as she could, and tied it back.
"Now, answer my question."
"Sloane,"
She could see it in his eyes and hear it in his voice. He was trying to dodge the question.
"No. I'm sent on a small plane to a place I've never heard of. The engine fails, I'm yanked from it, and a man I've never met falls from the sky, literally, and tells me he's my brother. I want to know what the hell is going on here!"
"I'm sorry, Sloane."
