"You're sorry?"

Sloane glared at Lorcan as she reached for the backpack he'd been carrying, hoping for some form of first-aid kit. When he tightened his grip, she clenched her jaw together, gripping tighter, and yanked the bag from his hand.

He winced at the sudden jerking motions and she realized he'd be hit in his shoulder, too.

Opening the bag, she huffed in annoyance at only finding rope, large hunting knives, climbing gear, and water.

"What exactly is the purpose of this bag?"

"Check the bottom. There should be—"

He snapped his mouth closed at the sound of footsteps.

Lorcan scrambled to turn off the flashlight.

Sloane reached for Lorcan's gun and pulled it from its holster.

"What are you doing?"

His teeth clenched together in pain.

"Someone's coming! You're in no shape to defend us."

She scooted closer, making sure they were both covered by the shadows of the fallen rocks around them.

Lorcan huffed and reached for his gun.

"You can't defend us with your eyes closed."

The snarkiness in his voice made Sloane want to slap him. The shuffling stopped her, freezing her in her spot.

She heard clicking sounds, knocking against the walls.

Was that morse code?

The clicking got louder. It definitively wasn't morse code. The clicking was coming from two beings.

They were tall with coarse, reptilian-like golden-yellow skin.

She watched as shadows grew closer, gripping the handle of the gun tighter with each step they took.

The clicking sounds began to take on different pitches, almost as if that's how they were communicating.

"Do you not hear the clicking?"

"What clicking?"

Lorcan's eyes never left the shadows. He watched them approach, being the first to see who they were.

She saw him breathe a sigh of relief and leaned over, hoping to find their rescuers, only to scream and scramble backward, fumbling the gun in her hand.
