"What do you mean, 'she's gone'?" I texted.
My heart was banging. It wouldn't be what I think of-
"She died."
Yeah, it is.
"She's dead," Noah continued, "She's sixty nine! We promised her we will make a huge birthday celebration when she's seventy!"
I hope I can hug him right now. I can't, he's too far away from me. Even if I can, I wouldn't get the courage to do it.
I stared at the message on my phone screen, unable to process the weight of those three words.
The reality of her passing hit me like a tidal wave, engulfing me in a sea of sorrow and disbelief. It felt as though the ground beneath me had crumbled, leaving me adrift in a sea of emotions.
With trembling fingers, I typed a response, "Noah, are you sure? How did it happen?"
Seconds stretched into an eternity as I awaited his reply, my heart pounding with anticipation.
The message notification finally appeared, and I opened it with a mix of trepidation and desperation.
"My parents got a call from the doctor," Noah replied, his words heavy with grief. "She has been so healthy all the time, and her condition right now? It was unexpected."
"Yeah," I agreed with him, "Take care, okay?"
"Of course."
"So you can't go to school tomorrow?" I asked, although I knew the answer.
"Yeah, I can't," Noah said,
"I tried to beg my mom to go, so that I can see you in that beautiful dress tomorrow at the school's party. Unfortunately, she doesn't allow me to. But I'll be back on Monday, at least," he replied, his words with some misery.
"I'll wear it again at my birthday party next time," I said, "Just for you."
"Awww, yeah sure," he answered, "It's late now, you should sleep too. Goodnight, sweetheart."
" 'Night, love you."
I closed my eyes, holding my phone tightly against my chest. The weight of the day's news lingered in the air, suffocating me with sadness and confusion.
Sleep seemed impossible, but exhaustion eventually took over, carrying me into a restless slumber.
