"Kim Namjoon?"
The staff called out. Part of me wanted to throw up, but the other part knew I could do it. I walked into the room and stood there in front of these fat older people. None of them looked like they knew anything about music.
"Will you be singing or dancing today?" One of them asked.
"Uh...actually I'll be rapping."
"Whenever you're ready."
I took a deep breath and started rapping one of my originals. I figured it was best to show them my own work than rely on remembering the words to someone else's. Watching their faces while I stood there, it seemed like they were impressed. Either that or I was making a huge fool of myself.
"Thank you Namjoon," one of the staff said. "We'll be in touch."
That's it? We'll be in touch? I waited all day to stand in a room for a whole minute just to be told they'll be in touch?Yoongi was outside waiting for me, he could tell I was frustrated.
"Don't worry," he said. "Once they figure out what they're looking for, they'll give us a call. Until then we keep putting ourselves out there. There's an open mic tonight, we should go!"
We headed to the place hosting the open mic night and put our names on the list. For some reason I was more nervous now than before at the audition. It was one thing to rap in front of a few strangers, but this place was packed. It was like one of those underground places you see in the movies, I felt really out of place.
"You're in your head again," I heard y/n say.
"This isn't my scene," I told her.
"Better get used to it," she said. "This is going to be your life."
"Sketchy underground bars in the middle of the city?"
Y/n shrugged, "better than hiding in your room from you mommy".
I jokingly shoved her. "I'd like to see you try this and tell me it doesn't scare you."
"Of course it's scary! But you're too good not to give it a shot. Just like...don't rap about bikinis or converse."
I shoved her again, she was a real pain sometimes.Yoongi walked over to us and said he knew the next guy going up on stage. "He auditioned after me today, he's really good".
Just then the guy took the stage and started his verse. Yoongi was right, he was good. He had a unique voice, very animated but technical with the way he pronounced his words. He stage presence was captivating, he danced almost better than he rapped. The crowed was loving him. Who was he?The song ended and the guy took a quick bow. "Thank you everyone! My name is J-hope, you were awesome tonight."
Yoongi walked over to J-Hope and gave him a fist bump. They acted as if they had known each other for years. The two of them walked over and Yoongi introduced us.
"This is my brother Namjoon, and his friend y/n."
"Nice to meet you guys, you here to perform?" J-hope asked.
"They are," y/n said. "I'm here to cheer them on. You were awesome by the way."
"Thank you! Can't wait to hear you two-I know this guy is going to kill it!" He said referring to Yoongi.
At that moment Yoongi's name was called to the stage and he handed a thumb drive to the dj. He was in the zone, the music started and it was as if he transformed into another person. The passion, the fire coming from the words he was saying, it was absolutely captivating. The entire crowd was in shock of how insane he sounded. I looked over at Y/n and she was completely glued to the stage. Suddenly, I noticed that she was looking at Yoongi the way I thought she would look at me when I was performing for her.
I couldn't help but become jealous, more jealous than I thought I ever would.
The music stopped and the crowd was cheering for my brother, and I had realized I was too caught up in watching y/n, that I had missed practically his entire song."Wow!" Said j-hope. "Your brother is the real deal!"
"He's something," added y/n. The look on her face hadn't changed. She was falling for my brother right in front of my eyes.
Yoongi walked over to us like he had just won a fight. "You're turn brother," he said to me with a huge gummy grin.
I gave him a pat on the shoulder and headed to the stage.Just then I felt y/n pull on my arm holding me back a bit. "Hey, remember...don't think, just rap. You're going to kill it."
All the jealous thoughts went away when I heard her support me like that, she really was my biggest fan. When I walked up to the stage I realized I didn't have a thumb drive like Yoongi for one of my own tracks. I did the only thing I could think of and asked the DJ to drop a beat. When the music started I did something I hadn't done in front of anyone before, I improvised. I started talking about my parents, how they didn't approve of my dreams. The crowd loved it, the energy was insane. When I looked to see if y/n was watching, I realized she had moved her way up to the front of the crowd and was right in the center of it all. The track ended and I felt like was on top of the world.
We went out celebrating after and didn't get home until the morning. When it was time to pass out I noticed Yoongi was sitting at his desk back at work. As tired as I was, I knew I should be taking a page out of his book and do the same. So I did.
A few weeks went by and J-hope had joined us in the apartment. The three of us decided to work together and before we knew it we had almost enough songs for a mix tape. If the label ever called we were ready. But it felt like that time would never come.
"Just be patient," y/n said. "If it's meant to be it will."
"My parents think I ruined my life," I said. "They're so angry."
"Yeah well, they were angry when you got a 99% on an algebra test in the sixth grade too. You're eighteen, and if you want to make this happen, I think you're doing the right thing."
"She's right," Yoongi said walking in the room. "They'll come around when we debut. They just have to see we made it to believe it."
Just then J-Hope walked in the room like he had seen a ghost. "Dude you ok?" I asked him.
"I made it." He said with a shaky voice.
"Made what?" Y/n asked him.
"The company. I'm a trainee."
We all broke out into cheers but it was clear he was still letting it sink in.
Yoongi's phone started to ring and we all when silent.
"It's the label," he said looking at us. He answered it and it was agony waiting for him to tell us. When he hung up he almost had no reaction at all.
"Well?" I asked him.
"I made it too."
I walked over and hugged him, which we hardly ever did, but it felt necessary at a time like this.
"What is with you guys?" Y/n said. "I thought you'd be happier?"
"Part of me thought that call wouldn't come," said j-hope.
"Well it did," I said. "And you deserve it. Both of you."
Just thens I heard my phone buzz and ran to grab it. I didn't recognize the number which told me it was them.
"Hello?" I said. "This is Kim Namjoon."
