Riley

4 February 2017

Monday 8:40 am

I draw on my nails as Ms. Greene goes on and on about school rules everyone already knows.

A door closed and the class made noise. My heart races. In walked Mr. Philips and this hot guy whose shirt read Colin-in+e = Cole. What a strange shirt. He looks familiar though.

Oh, it's the guy from the fair. He smiles as we lock eyes. I smile back and drop my nail polish pen.

"My name is Cole." He says, waving and blushing.

"Thank you, Cole. You can sit by Riley." Ms. Greene states pointing at me.

Cute guy walking towards me. Cute guy. Alert. Alert.

"Hi," I say calmly.

"Hello, Riley."

I like my name said by him. Anyway be cool. Cool. How do I do that again?

"May I see your schedule?"

"Um, sure." he hands it over and I give him mine.

"Whoa, it's basically mine," he says, surprised.

"Yeah, Miss Greene sits us based on how many classes we have together," I reply.

Colin is an interesting name. I don't think he looks like a Colin but that is what it says on his card.

"So, Riley looks like we will be seeing a lot of each other."

"Yes, we shall have to become friends to make Ms. Greene happy," I say somewhat sarcastically.

"Though I wish that you would want to be my friend for a better reason, I guess I should introduce myself. My name is Colin but I would prefer it if you would call me Cole."

"That makes sense with the shirt. It is so cool. I need one. My name is Riley but I go by Ri."

"Ri, Cole it is the first day of the semester do you really want to get a detention?" Ms. Greene is shooting daggers at us.

"No," Cole says quietly.

"Please 'remain quiet' both of you."

Note time. Cole passes me a piece of paper.

C: I hope you don't mind but I have to keep talking to you. You seem like a cool person.

I smile as I read that.

R: No, it's fine. I was actually going to get a paper for the same reason.

C: Good. So why do you go by Ri?

R: First, it's kind of a joke because people don't always pronounce Ri right. Second, it's what my sister, Anya, called me when she was younger. Why Cole?

He nods and smiles as he read this.

C: I've been Colin my whole life. Felt like a change.

R: Yeah, I like the name but (and don't take this the wrong way) all I think of is Mr. Collins from Pride and Prejudice. Oh and Colin from A Secret Garden.

C: I've never thought of Mr. Collins. I'll have to add that to my list of reasons Cole is better. I do, however, like Colin from A Secret Garden. It's just the fact that the name has an Old English touch to it.

R: That is very true.

C: So we should find out more about each other. What's the most effective way? Questions?

R: That sounds good to me. You go first.

C: Most basic - What's your favorite color?

R: Purple! :) Yours?
