"Dad put chains on the tires," I commented as I got in the truck the next morning. Bella hummed noncommittally in response, and it took a lot for me not to be exasperated with her. Why couldn't she see that Dad was trying his best? She wouldn't even call him Dad—it was always Charlie.
When we got to school, I spotted Mike and Jessica talking by Mike's car. Mike saw me and waved me over. With a quick goodbye to my sister, I headed across the parking lot to meet the two of them.
"Look!" Mike said, holding his hands out as if he was about to give me a hug. "It's snowing again!"
"Mike. . ." I warned, seeing the white powder in his hand, not wanting to get snow in my shirt again.
Luckily Jessica hit Mike's wrist, causing the powder to fly out of his hands. "Leave her alone, god."
"What?" Mike asked defensively. "Snow is fun!"
"Yeah, not when it's down your clothes," I commented.
"Oh my god. Edward is like, totally staring at Bella."
At Jessica's statement, I turned to look behind me. Sure enough Edward was leaning against the Volvo with his hands casually in his pockets, gaze trained on Bella as she was inspecting the tires on the truck.
I opened my mouth to reply, but that was when a screech echoed.
A dark blue van was skidding, tires locked and squealing against the brakes, spinning wildly across the ice of the parking lot. It was going to hit the back corner of the truck, andBella was standing between them.
She seemed to have frozen, staring only at the van as it moved towards her—
The sound of metal crumpling punctuated the screech as it collided with the truck.
"Bella!" I screamed, tearing across the parking lot. Oh my god. Oh my god oh my god oh my god.
Hyperventilating, I rounded the corner of the van, preparing myself for blood and ichor and everything in between—
But saw Edward Cullen holding Bella against him, hand held out against the side of the van.
As if he'd stopped it with his palm.
I looked at the scene in horror, shock, confusion. "What the hell—"
"She has a concussion," Edward interrupted.
"Get Tyler out of the van!" someone else shouted. There was a flurry of activity around the scene. People were screaming and crying.
I was still frozen in place. "But you—you were over by your car—"
"Y/n," Edward said forcefully. "Bella is hurt."
I snapped out of my shock and nodded. "Right, right!" I turned and saw Mike standing a ways away, face pale. "Go get the nurse, call 911!"
Edward didn't let go of Bella until she was safely in a stretcher with a neck brace fastened securely. I accompanied her in the back of the ambulance while Edward hopped in the front seat apparently not harmed enough to require a stretcher.
Dad was there, too, so the ambulance got a police escort to the county hospital. The unloaded Bella, and I could tell that she was somewhat okay, but still shaken. They wheeled her away to check her up and do some X-Rays, all while Dad and I were waiting in the lobby.
"What happened?" Dad asked. "I got the gist of it, but—"
"That Tyler kid almost hit Bella with his van, but Edward. . . pulled her out of the way. I think."
