"Y/n!"

The moment my eyelids snapped open, I was wide awake at the sound of Bella's scream.

I leapt out of bed and grabbed the knife from under my pillow, heart thundering against my ribcage. Vaguely I realized it was morning.

Was this it? Had Laurent and Victoria finally come for us?

Just moments after Bella's yell, she blew into my room. "Y/n—"

She froze at the sight of my knife. "Y/n, what the hell?"

"What is it?" I asked hastily. "Are they here? Did they come?"

"Who?"

"Laurent and Victoria!"

"What? No! Just—put down the knife, oh my god!"

Looking at her, I realized that she didn't look as frightened as she would have if two vampires showed up for us. But she was still dressed and ready, shoes on and everything.

Slowly I put the knife back beneath my pillow. "So then what is it? Why did you call for me?"

Her words came out in a rush. "They're going to shoot the wolves, Dad said that there were rewards being offered for their carcasses and he's going out there to make sure no one gets hurt. Apparently one of the wolves attacked a hiker or something and so that's why they're going to kill them." Her eyes were wide, scared.

My own eyes widened. No, those wolves were people. Oh god, what if they shot Jacob? But it didn't make sense, why would one of them attack a hiker? Maybe they didn't have as much control of themselves as I thought.

Something registered in my mind.

"Wait. . ." I squinted at her. "Why do you care if they're going to shoot the wolves?"

She was quiet for a long while. Then, she finally mumbled something under her breath.

"What?"

"Werewolves!" she exclaimed. "The Quileutes are werewolves. I don't know how many, but—"

My jaw dropped. "How do you know that? Did Jacob tell you?"

"No, I—wait. You know already?"

I hesitated. "Maybe?"

Her mouth fell open, too. "What? How?"

"I figured it out, too," I admitted. "A bit ago. After you and Jacob came home so you could clean up your head before you guys left for the ER Jacob was telling me about his worries about Sam, and he mentioned the legends again. It made me remember how Billy's grandfather made a treaty with the Cullens, and I thought well, if the Cullens are vampires, then surely that must mean the rest of the legend was true—the part about the Quileutes being wolf men, I mean."

Bella's brow knit. "And you didn't think to tell me?"

"Billy made me promise," I said. "Besides, it was their secret, not mine. I didn't have a right to betray it to anyone."

"But—"

"You didn't tell me about the Cullens," I pointed out. "I hid the Quileutes' secret for the same reason you hid theirs."

She had nothing to say to that.

"When did Dad leave?" I asked.

That seemed to snap her out of her thoughts. "Shit, we have to go! I'm going to go warn Jacob right now, that's why I woke you up." She spun around and ran out my door. Over her shoulder, she called, "Come on, I'll meet you in the car!"
