When I opened my eyes, after I got over my surprise that I'd lived through the night, I leapt out of bed and sprinted downstairs to call Billy again.

He didn't answer.

"Shit," I muttered.

"Y/n?"

I whirled around to see Bella in the doorway of the kitchen.

"Hey Bella."

"Who were you calling?"

I hesitated. "Billy. I wanted to go to the reservation today. To visit Jacob and make sure he was alright," I added as a cover.

"Oh." She didn't seem too upset, but I could tell she was still shaken from yesterday. "Can I come?"

"Yeah, sure." Hopefully when she was talking with Jacob, if he was even around, I could speak with Billy in private and tell him the situation. I hoped he would be kind enough to let us stay with him for a bit until we could figure out what else to do. There was no way Laurent would come anywhere near a pack of werewolves.

The drive to La Push was short. I stopped in front of Jacob's house, killing the motor and rolling down the windows.

"Why don't you wait here," I offered. "I'll go see if Jacob's even home first."

Before Bella could agree, I hopped out of the car and ran up to the door. I rapped on it three times.

It was a very long while before it opened.

"Y/n?" Billy asked.

"Hey, Billy. Um, I was hoping we could talk?"

Billy's eyes slid past me to the passenger seat of the truck, where Bella was sitting. His eyes narrowed. "You said you wouldn't tell—"

"I didn't tell anyone, I promise." I lowered my voice. "She just thinks we're here visiting Jacob. You know. Since he has mono."

He was quiet for a moment, simply staring at me.

Then he maneuvered his wheelchair so that there was enough space for me to walk inside. The door shut behind me.

"What is this about?" Billy asked. We didn't move from the front room. "You seem. . . shaken up. Is this about the incident in the clearing?"

"Jacob already told you then," I guessed. "Yeah, this is about that. And. . . thank you, by the way. I'm not sure exactly who else was there, but. . . I'm very grateful that they were. I can't thank them individually, since I plan on keeping my promise to you, so I'm thanking you instead."

He was surprised at that. "You're quite welcome. Really, I don't know why that. . . that bloodsucker chose to come so close to our territory."

I fidgeted with the end of my braid. "He has Bella and I's scent."

Billy didn't say anything.

"I was wondering if it was possible for. . . for the two of us to stay with you and Jacob. Just for a little bit, until we figure this out. Laurent won't come anywhere near—"

"He may not come here alone," Billy interrupted, "but he may come back with others if he truly wants you girls that much."

I stopped.

He was saying no?

"Billy, please," I said, growing desperate. "I'll do whatever work you need me to do, I'll make sure Bella doesn't see anything she's not supposed to—"

"I'm sorry," he said, "but it's too risky." His gaze moved past my shoulder and widened.

I turned, and through the window I spotted five men surrounding Bella by the truck. I recognized Jacob among them.
