For nearly two hours, I was pacing the living room.

Bella was dating Edward.

Edward, who was a vampire.

Who was part of a family of vampires.

It was unbelievable, but what was more unbelievable was that Bella had allowed herself to get involved or that she wasn't worried for her own safety. Billy had said the Cullens only fed off of animals, but surely there was still a risk, right?

Suddenly I heard Dad's car in the garage.

The front door slammed and I could hear him banging around under the stairs, putting his tackle away.

"Hi there, kiddo!" Dad called as he walked into the kitchen.

"Hey, Dad," I said.

He was scrubbing his hands in the sink.

"Where's the fish?"

"I put it out in the freezer."

"Billy dropped off some of Harry Clearwater's fish fry this afternoon." I worked to sound enthusiastic.

"He did?" Dad's eyes lit up. "That's my favorite."

Dad cleaned up while I got dinner ready, since Bella wasn't there. It didn't take long till we were sitting at the table, eating in silence. Dad was enjoying his food. I was caught in my own thoughts, though, thinking about the Cullens and Bella and where they were now. . .

"What did you do with yourself today?" he asked, snapping me out of my reverie.

"Well, this afternoon I just hung out around the house. . . ."

"I'm assuming Bella is still out with Edward."

My fork froze on its way to my mouth. "You know they're together?"

Luckily he didn't look as at ease about it as he sounded. "She told me this morning, right before she went to go meet his family."

My eyes widened. "She went to meet his family? Like at his house?"

He looked over at me, obviously confused by my reaction. "Isn't that what you're supposed to do in a relationship?"

I tried to backpedal. "Right, yeah. I'm just surprised, I mean. . . this is Bella." Bella who had never had a boyfriend and decides to date a vampire as her first.

"I was surprised, too," Dad said. "But Carlisle is a good man, and the Cullens are a good family."

I thought carefully about how to broach my next question. "Do you think it's. . . wise for Bella to be dating someone so seriously?" Or someone who could tear out her throat?

Dad sighed. "No. But. . . Edward makes her happy. That's good enough for me."

I was silent for the rest of dinner.

Dad had to leave after dinner, because there was an emergency he had to attend to. Some sort of animal attack, or something. The rest of the evening was uneventful, which of course led me to overthinking and overanalyzing everything. I tried to create plans and schemes and ideas to get her away from Edward.

I wondered if she knew that he was a vampire, but then I decided immediately that she had to. After all, she'd seen him sparkling in the kitchen and wasn't freaked out.

The door slamming open cut into my thoughts, and immediately I poked my head out of my room. "Dad?"

No answer. A moment later Bella appeared at the top of the staircase. Her hair was messy and she was shaking, but what stood out the most were her wild, frightened eyes.
