That morning Mike seemed to be back to his usual self, gaining enthusiasm as he talked about the weather report for this weekend. The rain was supposed to take a minor break, and so maybe his beach trip would be possible. I hoped it would be, it was something I was actually excited for.

The rest of the morning passed in a blur with nothing too eventful happening besides Eric mentioning he maybe wanted Angela to ask him to the dance.

At lunch, all Jessica could talk about was the dance. Besides the other day, she didn't seem to be affected by Mike's rejection. Apparently she'd found someone else.

"Edward Cullen is staring at you again," Jessica said to Bella after a lapse in conversation.

I turned to look at their usual table, but he wasn't there. I turned back to Jessica, confused, but that was when I saw Edward, smiling crookedly, staring at Bella from an empty table across the cafeteria from where he usually sat. Once he'd caught her my eye, he raised one hand and motioned with his index finger for her to join him.

As Bella stared in disbelief, he winked.

"Does he mean you?" Jessica asked with astonishment in her voice.

"Maybe he needs help with his homework," Bella muttered for her benefit. "Um, I'd better go see what he wants."

Heads turned as she walked to where Edward was. They spoke for a moment, but then Bella took the seat across from him.

"What did she do to get his attention?" Jessica asked, in awe.

I wasn't sure.

Edward didn't show up for Bio, either.

After school, I waited by the truck for Bella, but she never showed up. She wasn't in gym, either. Did she ditch?

Mike's car pulled up beside me and the window rolled down. "Hey, Y/n."

"Hey, Mike, what's up?"

"I just wanted to let you know Bella left early today."

"Oh." Well, shit. She had the keys to the truck.

"Need a ride?"

"Yes please," I said, relieved.

I quickly got into the passenger side of his car and pretty soon we were on our way.

"How do you know Bella left early?"

"Some kid fell and hit his head and there was blood, like, everywhere. At the sight of it your sister got pretty woozy so she left."

"Damn," I sighed. Bella has always had a particular hatred of blood. She said it was the smell that made her sick, that it smelled like rust and salt. I had a similar reaction, but usually I was able to manage it a little better than she. I think her sense of smell was just better than mine so she was more sensitive to it. "So you saw her leave, then?"

"Yeah."

The silence grew.

"You're quiet," I said suspiciously.

Mike glanced at me out of the corner of his eye. "She left with. . . Edward."

My eyes went round as marbles. "She what?"

"Yeah. He carried her out of the room and everything."

I leaned back in my seat and scoffed in disbelief. "He's going to get her in trouble one day."

"I'm worried about her."

"So am I."

"This weekend she's coming, right? To the beach?" Mike adjusted his grip on the wheel.
