family backstory ; maya ashland was born to carrie and justin ashland in the small town of seaford, delaware in 2004. she has an older sister, ella, who is 24 years old. while she was growing up, her parents tended to stray further away as she got older, whether it be always at work or always out together to the point that they were rarely home. once ella turned 18, their parents claimed that since she was now an adult, she would be left to take care of 12 year old maya. ella eventually found a job in cousins, massachusetts instead of going to college, and moved the two down there. ella opened and owned a tattoo and piercing shop which allowed her to practice her art and make people happy, while being with her sister. maya learned asl at a young age, due to her sister being deaf. maya is very proud of her sister for opening a business whilst being deaf. the two now have a beach house, and the shop that they run essentially together.

relationship with love interest ; one of the earlier summers in cousins when the fishers and conklins came to stay, belly, conrad, jeremiah and steven visited the store because belly wanted to get henna. after maya did belly's henna for her, she was checking out and paying and maya was signing to her sister and translating for the group of teens. conrad commented on how he thought it was so cool that ella had opened a store whilst being deaf. he also complimented maya's smiley piercing, which was done by her sister. conrad returned the next day to ask for a tattoo even though he was technically 16 and underage. the sisters let it slide, and after he got it, he asked maya out and they hit it off from there.
