Karolina walked into one of the research rooms in one of the army's bases. They had gotten a hold of the submarine of the Nazi who murdered Dr. Erskine, thanks to Steve for going after him. Howard radioed her over to help him check it out.
When she walked in her glance got caught by the few generals walking with Colonel Phillips. "And those guys?" Karolina jumped down and stood next to Stark in the lower pit they lowered the vessel in to get a better access to the bottom of the submarine, at least that is what they were classifying it as. "Checking out how much authority we have to see if we matter or not." He looks over at her with a small smile. He is always half serious in whatever situation. Karolina smiled as she looked at the paperwork, she walked around with the analysis on a clipboard and trailed her hand over the material on the sides. This was much more advanced than what she had been told.
"I spoke to the president this morning. As of today, the SSR is being relocated." One of the generals spoke before Phillips looked over at Peggy. "Colonel?"
"We are taking the fight to Hydra. Pack your bags, Agent Carter." He turned around to not only see just Howard anymore. "You too, Stark...Baranova, you know the drill."
"Yes, sir." She had a small smirk on her face as she watched him turn back around. "We're flying out to London tonight." Karolina grabbed a file and checked off a few things as Stark tried to see if he could get any data off the submarine.
"You are not enough," Karolina heard the Colonel's last words in a conversation with Steve before she looked over at Stark. "We should go," he held out his hand as she looked over at Steve one last time, she saw just how much sadness he held in his eyes. Yet maybe, it would be better if he stayed here, at least he would be safe. She grabbed Howard's hand as they got out of the pit and walked to grab their belongings preparing for the new mission.
A few months later
After the mission, Karolina hopped off the plane to pick up a few things for food later. After months of canned foods a proper meal would be nice. She soon saw the name Captain America everywhere. It was the first thing that caught her eye, posters on the sides of old buildings, train cars, she even saw some kids playing with the top of a metal trash bin making believe it was a shield. "Now what the - " she got cut off by someone shoving a comic book into her rib cage. She flipped through it as she took in a deep breath. The comic book being riddled with drawings and heroic missions where the star-spangled man with a plan would come out on top every time. "Steve." She hadn't spoken to him or even heard anything from him except the snippets she would hear from Peggy.
It was the year 1943, Karolina was mostly held up in the lab trying to help soldiers' wounds. With the new technological advances of Hydra, more soldiers lost their lives due to their lack of knowledge. Different trials, serums, and antibiotics. It all failed. As another experiment fizzled out, she sat back with a sigh. Karolina opened one of the drawers in her desk and saw the Captain America comic. She closed it back up and looked around the lab. This couldn't be all now, could it? Something had to change.
She was done sitting around all day.
