Karolina set up her gun on the roof of the building. Her eyes peered through the dark night, the street lights dim. The sky welcomed the city night, stars riddled the sky. There were less out here in the cities. It had been years since she had been able to go out. Karolina breathed in the air the best she could with the muzzle placed right back on her face, courtesy of HYDRA. Even then she could smell the dinner that was almost burnt on the third floor of the apartment building she looked at. The smell of the rain, puddles splattered across the pavement of the streets of Brooklyn.
She watched as the reflection of the television appeared on the droplet stained window. The apartment she had to keep her eye on was two blocks away on the fifth floor. She placed her finger on the trigger before resting her chin on the gun. Her muzzle clinking against the metal. Such a small noise yet it echoed in her ears as Karolina closed her eyes at that moment. Deep breath in through the nose, exhale out through the mouth. She opened her eyes again and kept her focus. It had to be done yet, this one was more personal.
Karolina got up from her crouched position behind the parapet of the roof. She grabbed the gun and shoved it back into one of the holsters on her back as she slowly climbed down the building of a bakery, careful to stay in the shadows.
The target turned off the television and walked to the outlet behind the couch to grab their phone. The phone was face down on the coffee table near the window but just as they went to reach it they froze with their hand hovering above their phone as soon as they saw a shadow over the chair next to them. One that was too big to be just the silhouette of a bird or cat passing through the windows.
A few seconds passed before he looked up and slowly, fear began to fill his expression and body. She tilted her head to the side tauntingly. He swore for a second he saw her eyes light up with what could only be described as devilment.
Karolina crouched down and let herself in through the window, she closed it back up once she was inside. This was the first mission after the ice, after so many years.
She had to comply.
She stood up straight, removed her muzzle, and looked him dead in the eyes. She raised a smaller gun from her holster on her lower back, releasing it with a simple click.
"Hail the Red HYDRA."
As HYDRA allowed her to speak more often, her Russian accent bled through her words. Speaking Russian for so long could be told by her way with words.
The only thing that could be heard was his quiet begs that turned into a loud scream cut short as blood splattered across the wall.
The fright in his eyes faded into nothing as a thud echoed through the apartment. She walked over him and grabbed his phone from the coffee table. She continued to take a picture of the dead man then uploaded it into S.H.I.E.L.D's infiltrated database. It passed through every circuit possible.
She then wiped some HYDRA files from the computer on the desk by the door which was currently unoccupied, seeing as the owner was dead on the floor.
She pulled out the disk after copying all the files he had and smashed the computer on the floor, glass from the screen shattered across the floor. She grabbed her muzzle and put it back on as sirens approached, a couple blocks out. She crouched back down and closed the window behind her. She jumped the entire fire escape from the fifth floor and then continued to walk by the five guards who were stationed outside, now piled up on top of each other. She left behind a bomb as the explosion lit up the dim streets. Smoke rose to the sky as she walked back into the shadows.
And so... the HYDRA takeover expanded once again.
A couple of years passed, nothing.
S.H.I.E.L.D. got scared and did exactly what HYDRA wanted. They appointed Pierce on the council.
She was the most wanted assassin in the world. The black shadow. The Slasher. The dead soldier. Hydra's best. The Red Room's assailant. The most brutal murderer.
After almost 60 years of field experience, she became the best of the worst. Caught in the worst possible game, every move being her own yet... not. A chess match where the only way you could win was if every other player died at your hand. Her folder being the only one under "Red HYDRA."
The man killed was one of the few left on the original board when Fury discussed advancing his plan with the Avenger Initiative.
With the most integral files missing on HYDRA, especially the names of those who had previously been discovered in the past years, the melting pot started.
As the agents of SHIELD started to run around scared, HYDRA slowly went in and infested the agency with a poison starting at the roots.
Once Karolina finished her mission she went back to HYDRA headquarters and got pulled back into her cell. Some agents went in with her as they went right up to her with one word, "Open." They shoved the last capsule they had of the serum down Karolina's throat as they sent her to find Steve and Natasha as yet another mission. They let her out more often now, this would be her 112th since they retrieved her back from the ice. Now the one they needed to complete the most, needed all they had.
