THUMP! "Ha ha ha, that is what you get for getting a higher grade than me on the physics test," Samantha said while laughing.
Everyone in the hallways stopped to watch as the brown haired girl made fun of me. 'Why?' Why is it every time I help someone this is how I get thanked? My blood was now boiling with both embarrassment and anger. That is when I really had it.
I stood up slowly from the ground ready to face the person who has humiliated me through the four years of High School.
"You know what Samantha?" I said glaring at her with my tired green eyes. "I am sick of you and your friends always pushing me around and tripping me. I can't believe after helping you study for that physics final this is how you thank me.""Well then believe it, because I will never say a single thank you for someone as worthless as you," she sneered. "Oh, and for the record, next time you help me study for a test, try harder."
I don't know what I have ever done to this girl for her to treat me like this. I remember my first term in freshman year going by smoothly; then next thing I know my head is being shoved down a toilet. That was how my wonderful (note the sarcasm) years of high school has been like.
Before she walked away she gave me a look of disgust, like I was something that came out of a dumpster. Not that she would know what a dumpster looked like. How could she? It is clear she never lifted a piece of garbage ever in her life; with her perfectly manicured nails and soft hands I had to be right.
After she left I slowly got up while picking up my scattered books from the floor, ignoring the pang of pain that shot up my knee. 'Huff, people these days just don't know how to say a simple thank you,' I thought. "Oh God, please help me and those around me."
Just as I was about to get up I felt someone standing behind me. Oh God, if it is that girl again I might scream. Before I could do anything, I heard a soft sweet voice talk to me from behind.
"Hey there, your name is Ruby right?" I turned around fast from surprise to see a girl with a scarf wrapped around her head. I sighed with relief when I saw it was one of these girls from the MSA (Muslim Student association) School Club. These people along with a group of other students who aren't one of Samantha's followers never showed any hatred for me. I can see the pity in their faces but never had anyone talked to me until now. I could tell by the way the girl was dressed that she was a Muslim, but......... what does she want?
"Ummm, yes," I answered with a little hesitation. I am not taking my chances with anyone right now until I know what she wants.
I started to list all the possible things she would want from me. After all, the only reason someone would want to talk to me is to just borrow my homework. Before I could say anything, she told me something I never imagined anyone would tell me.
"I just wanted to tell you that was brave of you to stand up for yourself, even if it was just for a little bit." Her smile was so sweet that it made it look like her eyes were twinkling."Wait, what?" I asked from shock. This was the first time in forever someone acknowledges me, of course I was shocked.
Her smile wavered a little, "I am sorry, did I say something wrong?"
"No, not at all. It is just that nobody ever told me anything that nice in a while."
"Your joking? Nobody? Not even your parents?" Her grey eyes were widened with surprise. It was as if I had burst a bubble of innocence that was hidden from the world.
I looked to the ground with a frown on my face. 'She doesn't know,' I told myself. But from the look on her face, that is when I knew that she understood.
"I am sorry, I didn't know." I could tell from the look of pity on her face that she meant it.
"My father passed away before I was born, and my mom died while giving birth to me." I thought that the whole school knew about the seventeen-year-old orphan that killed her mother.
I was mistaken.
I looked up from the floor at the girl and saw that she had tears in her eyes.
She talked to me between her sobs and said, "I know how it feels like to lose a parent. But two and growing up without them, I can't bear to think what you are going through right now."
"Oh, that's alright, its fine I am used to it." I soothed her while handing her a napkin. To be honest, her tears weren't worth my pain. I have survived all these years without them, surely I can make it through this painful life. I realized that I didn't even know this girls name and she was here trying to comfort me. Strange.
"It's not worth crying over. Plus, you haven't even told me your name."
I took out a napkin out of my bag so that I can hand it to the girl.
"Oh, how rude of me," she said while taking the napkin from me. "My name is Ella.
"Okay, that is actually a beautiful name, what does it mean?"
"It means "beautiful fairy", my dad named me that. He used to tell me that I was his little fairy girl and nobody else's, that was all before he died," She smiled but there was a look of sadness in her eyes. Before I can say anything she told me something I haven't heard in years, "hey do you want to be friends?"
That question put a big smile on my face. How can I say no to such a question?"YES! Definitely!"
She gave me that pretty smile of hers and hugged me, my first real hug in a long time. This moment was the moment that changed my life forever and made me the person who you will soon meet.
