The first thing that came to my attention as soon as I looked into the mirror was how different I looked. My ivory face seemed so much brighter, and my green eyes were shining with light. I couldn't believe this was all just from the scarf wrapped around my head.
"You look beautiful," Ella gushed.
"I have to agree with you on that Ella," Laila stood behind me, adjusting a few things on my scarf.
"Thank you both so much! I don't know how to thank you enough," I told them.
"You don't need to thank us. And by the way this is the day were you will officially be a Muslim, so this is the least we can do to help you get ready," voiced Laila.
Before I could say anything there was a knock on the door.
"Who is it?" yelled Ella
"It's me, Noah, "said the muffled voice behind the door.
As soon as I knew who was behind that door I felt my blood reach my cheeks. Thankfully no one noticed because everyone's attention was on the door.
"What do you want?" asked Ella while opening the door.
"Am I not allowed to see how my sister is doing," smirked Noah.
Oh my God that smirk on his face. I couldn't help but stare until I remembered that one of the etiquette's of Islam is to lower your gaze when a non-mehram (someone who is not your uncle, father, or brother) is around. So I quickly lowered my gaze before anybody notices and noted to myself to try to not do it again.
"Ya right, because you totally care about me," replied Ella sarcastically.
"I do care," he said trying to look offended. "Anyways, i was just coming to tell you that the car is ready and you better hurry, you don't want Ruby to be late for her Shahadah (the Muslim profession of faith, also used when a non Muslim converts to Islam ) do you?"
"Of course not, and FYI her name is not Ruby anymore she changed her name to Amal. She decided to change it because she wanted to begin a new page in her life, so she started with changing her name. I told her it was fine to change it and the reason why I didn't change mine when we converted was because my name was too precious to me since our dad........," trailed off Ella.
"Oh, okay then." He looked at me weirdly. "Amal." He said my name as if trying to weight it on his tongue. Him saying my new name sent a chill down my back that sent goose bumps all over my body. The moment was soon gone when he left.
"Um are you okay?" I was quickly snapped out of my daze and focused my attention on Laila.
"Yes I am okay, why wouldn't I be?" I said a little too fast.
"Never mind," said Laila a little bit hesitantly.
I didn't miss the look that Laila and Ella shared, or the quick glance Ella gave to the door. There was a long silence that came after.
"Um, don't you think we better get going?" I voiced trying to break the awkward silence.
"Oh ya, come on we don't wanna be late, my brother already started the car," Ella quickly shooed us out of her room, and closed the door behind her.
Now it was off to the Mosque, the place where my destiny and new life will begin. Insha'Allah (If God will's it) it will be the beginning of a happy life, and the light at the end of the tunnel.
