chapter nine

"you know i love you."

you turned your head, stiffening at the sight of your laid back husband. he looked like nothing ever happened.

his eyes, shining a muddy green that reflected the eyes of your beloved son, his hair dark and  messy. never could tame it.

you let out a shaky breath, taking a step towards him with a smile. if you cried, you knew it would all go to hell.

"i know." you gently stroked his cheek. "i miss you. a lot."

"miss me for what?" he laughed, pressing his forhead against yours. "i was only out at the market for a bit."

he lifted two bags of groceries up, placing them on the table that suddenly popped up.

"hows my baby?" he brought a hand down to carress your swollen stomach. "you behaving, kiddo?"

"he's very well, love." you held back the wave of tears, hoping that your voice wouldn't crack too much. "grew a lot. runs off by himself now."

your husband laughed heartily. "what a future to look forward to. you, me, the baby living in ember island. we'll raise him till we're all old and gray and have grandchildren, then depart for the spirit world hand in hand."

you let out a small sob, wiping your tears as they fell. the dam you had held up had broken.

"what's wrong, darling?" your beloved soun you around to face him, wiping away your tears. "you know i hate to see you upset."

you sucked in a breath, wiping your tears and putting on a feeble smile.

"just so excited for our future." you rested your head on his chest. "i love you."

"i love you too."

you woke up, taking in deep breaths to quash the dissapointment you felt in your gut. you held in your tears as you looked down at your baby boy, stroking his dark hair, just like his fathers.

you let yourself cry a bit, hugging your baby tight to your chest as you whispered a call to your husband.

"i miss you so much, yuka."
