The book was on my bed, opened on page 73. The summoning spell. What could it mean? Why is the book appearing after so many months, and why me? I wasn't sure about the answer but I knew what I was going to do. Close the book and burn it. That should make it disappear. I took the book outside, took a lighter, and put it on fire. I then took my bag and went to my first class for the day.
Today was my first day, and I didn't want any magic ruining it for me. I got inside the class and only found the professor. I greeted him and went to sit down. He was Mr Armano, who would be teaching social psychology.
Social psychology is the scientific study of how thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are influenced by the actual, imagined, or implied presence of others. The students started getting inside the class, and he started teaching. University was very different from high school. You get to choose if you want to go to class or not, and you mostly take notes in class. Mr Armano was a cool professor. He knew what he was doing and sounded like he was passionate. When class was over, I decided to go looking for a job but first go to the bathroom since I was really pressed. When I got into one of the stalls, I saw the book again, and it was opened on page 73. I checked the coast and then said the spell out loud.
"Spirits of air, sand and sea,
converge to set the angel free.
In the wind, I send this rhyme.
Bring Death before me before my time.""Oh good, I've been looking for you. But first, I should say, you can not simply burn the book of magic. Especially with human fire. That is rather stupid, " the Great Witch said with a mocking smile.
"Why is this book following me?" I asked in a harsh tone.
"The magical world is in danger. There have been new creatures slowly threatening people's lives. We need you to help the magical world and stop the creatures from causing more chaos." She said.
"No!" I shouted.
"No? Do you remember what you are? What is your purpose in life as the chosen one? You can not simply run away from magic. It is who you are. You are also a part of the EOC."
"I thought it was clear after I left that I want nothing to do with magic! It ruined my life!"
" You can not run away. You are, by blood, a magical creature. Your partner is waiting for you."
"Who is my partner?"
"Jadah Fernandez "
"Absolutely not!" I said and shut the book close. I threw it inside the toilet, and on my way out, I bumped to a girl. She was lightskin and had long wavy brown hair and wore a baggy jean with a hoodie.
"Who were you talking to?" She asked, looking curious, but I think she was just nosy.
"My friend. On...on the phone." I answered
"About magic?"
"Yeah. She has DID, so I usually live in her world with the characters that she has. I have to go now." I said and quickly left. That was a really creative lie.
There was no way I was going to work with Jadah. I'm in love with Jadah, but what happened between us was just painful. Hearing her name just breaks my heart. Working with her would be nice, but at the same time, it would hurt. She doesn't remember who I am or anything that happened between us.
I got inside my car and drove to the cafe where I wanted to work. I got inside and found a guy behind the counter. I greeted him and told him I was here for an interview. He told me his boss was at the back, which was in the kitchen. The cafe looked so good. The walls were a dark gray and had a few tables. It was new in town, so I understood why it was small. It had a few art decorations around, and they looked really nice. I went to the kitchen and I saw the owner. She was busy baking and decorating cakes. She looked really beautiful. She also looked like she was struggling.
"Are you okay? Do you need any help?" I asked
"Yes. Just take these and put them in the oven." She said, a small smile on her face. "Hi. Welcome to Cafe Cade. I am so sorry that you have to see me like this. It's just that we literally opened the cafe a week ago, and so many people are coming, but we are understaffed." She looked apologetic. "You seem like a good person, so you may start working here today. The contract is in my office, so you'll get to sign it. What job were you applying for?" She asked.
"Baking. I'm good with that." I answered
" Then you can help me. Thank you so much. I'm Zara, by the way. " She said, and I introduced myself as well. She showed me around and told me what I needed to do.
Baking was something I low-key liked doing. My grandmother taught me all I knew about baking. I missed her so much. I haven't seen her in months. I talked to her here and there but it's not the same. This whole magic thing really made me angry and sad at the same time. It ruined my whole life, but at least I had Max by my side.
While working, I had a good time baking. It reminded me of when I was young and used to spend time with my grandmother. Zara was such a nice person to work with. She was so kind and fun. I asked her some questions about herself, like how old she was and what made her open a cafe. She was 23 years old and opened the cafe because she loved baking and loved coffee and thought about turning it into a job. Zach, who was the barista, would come to the back sometimes and chat when there were no people that needed anything, which was only twice. I got a phone call from Max and picked it up.
"Are you inside your dorm?" He asked, sounding very worried.
"No...why?" I replied
"Because there is a strange looking fire, and it's really huge and scary. You should come now!" He said, sounding scared.
"I'm on my way." I said. I was pretty close to knocking off, so I asked Zara to leave and said there's an emergency, and she said I could leave.
I immediately got inside the car and rushed to the university. If it was fire, then the university security should've already done something by now. When I got there I saw that Max was right. The fire was strange looking. It was blue and had red tips, but it wasn't huge.
"This is huge to you?" I asked him.
"Yes! Can't you see?!" He said, looking very terrified of what he was seeing. I shook my head and opened the door. The fire was mostly in the living room. What was weird was that Max was the only one who saw, and yet he didn't call the fire fighters. Usually, when there's a fire in a house or room, the room becomes warm or hot, but this one is just normal. I decided to put my hand just to test the waters, and I know that sounds dangerous, but nothing happened. I didn't get hurt or burnt. It was, in fact, quite cool. I then walked through the fire while Max stood by the door, and everything went black.
