Lightkit stood outside the nursery, squirming with excitement. It was her apprentice ceremony!
"All cats that can swim please gather underneath the willow tree for a Clan meeting!" Waterstar yowled.
Lightkit looked back at Blazekit, Streamfrost's only kit, and sighed. Blazekit was only a quarter moon old: she won't be an apprentice anytime soon. But her littermates will. Darkkit, Palekit, and Soulkit flanked her as Lightkit marched towards the willow tree.
"These kits have reached the age of six moons and are ready to be apprenticed. Lightkit, from this day on, until you have earned your warrior name, you will be known as Lightpaw. Your mentor will be Splashflight. I hope Splashflight will pass down all she knows onto you."
Splashflight walked up to Waterstar.
"Splashflight," Waterstar began. "You are ready to take on an apprentice. You have received excellent training from Firepool, and you have shown yourself to be energetic and determined. You will be the mentor of Lightpaw, and I expect you to pass on all you know to her."
Lightpaw eagerly touched noses with her mentor. She waited impatiently for her littermates to get their mentors. Darkpaw got Shinewhisker, Palepaw got Fluffheart, and Soulpaw got Rosedapple.
"Don't worry," Splashflight whispered to her. "I'll teach you the best I can. Even if it means to risk my life."
