I leaned back in my chair, phone pressed against my ear, frustration building with each passing second. Rowan was supposed to help me find a fake bride—someone to help me navigate this mess of a situation. But so far, all I had gotten was a series of half-hearted excuses and vague reassurances. I wasn’t fooled.

"You’ve got to be kidding me," I muttered, the sound of a woman’s voice faintly reaching my ear from the other side of the line. "Stop making excuses, Rowan. I know exactly what’s going on."

There was a long pause before Rowan’s voice came through the phone, slightly muffled, and I could hear him chuckling. "You caught me," he said, sounding far too amused for my liking.

I pinched the bridge of my nose. "Look, can we focus on finding me a fake bride? I really need someone to help me out here." The task was becoming increasingly urgent, and Rowan seemed to be taking everything in stride, like this was just another one of his usual distractions.

"I’ll try to help, but it’s not as simple as you think, man," Rowan said, his voice trailing off. I could hear another moan in the background. That was it.

I ended the call abruptly. My patience was at an all-time low. If Rowan couldn’t even help me with this, then I was going to have to find someone else—someone reliable. And fast.

Just as I was about to get back to work, my assistant, Lucian, walked in, holding a cup of coffee. She looked every bit the professional as she smiled at me.

"Good morning, Mr. Moreno," she said, her voice warm, and I couldn’t help but notice how well she was carrying herself today. She looked sharp—her hair was styled neatly, her outfit professional and crisp. There was something about her presence that stood out in a room full of people.

"Thanks, Lucian," I said, accepting the coffee from her with a nod. She was a good assistant—punctual, efficient, and always on top of things. She had a calm confidence that worked well in our office.

She smiled again, small but genuine. "Anything else you need?"

I shook my head, trying to clear my thoughts. "No, just keep me updated on the pending projects. I’ll handle everything else."

Lucian gave a slight nod, her smile not faltering as she turned to leave the room. But before she exited, she glanced back at me. "Have a good day, Mr. Moreno."

"You too," I replied quickly, trying to sound casual, even though I found myself watching her leave. There was something about the way she moved—something confident yet effortless. But I quickly pushed the thought away.

I needed to focus. Lucian was my assistant, and my mind was already occupied with enough distractions.

The hours dragged on, and every time Lucian passed through the office, I found myself watching her more than I should have. It wasn’t like me to get sidetracked by something so trivial. But I had been working in this office for years, and there was something about her energy that stood out. She wasn’t just another employee; there was a quiet competence to her that intrigued me.

I found it easy to admire her work ethic, though. Her professionalism made it difficult to let personal thoughts seep in. But still, I couldn’t help noticing how effortlessly she seemed to handle everything she did.

As the day wore on, I tried to focus on the task at hand, but I couldn’t ignore the nagging feeling that I was being drawn into something I shouldn’t be. The fake bride situation still loomed over me, but my frustration had only grown. Rowan wasn’t being helpful, and it felt like no one else was going to step up.
