Soar walked down the steps into Devin and Cassandra's base. It was quiet, which wasn't a surprise, but it was an uncomfortable and uneasy silence. He walked down the halls and looked for Devin and Cassandra. Usually, whenever he, Glitch, or Commander visited, Quake would be the one to meet them at the door. She wasn't there today, so Soar had to wander down the halls aimlessly searching for the two scientists.
There was a row of cells on the wall next to him. One of them held Lloyd and Huntress. They were asleep, snuggled close to each other. Soar stopped in front of the barred door and stared inside before the ground caught his eye. The concrete ground was cracked, and there were a few stained spots. Soar didn't know what they were from, but the thoughts of what it could be made his skin crawl.
He took a right and headed down another hall looking for where Devin and Cassandra were. He finally reached a room with an open door, he walked inside.
"Ahh, Soar. Quake told us you were coming." Cassandra opened her arms and walked toward him.
Soar pushed her away, physical affection was his least favorite form of affection, and Cassandra touching him was even worse. "Yeah, well, I can't find her." He looked off to the side to see Devin sitting on a chair. The man looked angry, and a broken chair near the wall confirmed Soar's suspicions.
"Ohh her..." Cassandra pitched her voice higher and looked back at her husband. "Hmm."
"Where is she?" Soar demanded. He didn't necessarily like Quake, but they were the only elemental masters on Glitch's side. They had to stick together. "What happened?"
"She's dead." Devin stood up and walked towards Soar.
"What?! How? What happened?" Fear shot through Soar's chest. Quake's elemental power was shockwaves. Was that why the ground by Lloyd and Huntress' cage was cracked? And if so, what were the stains from?
"She inhaled vengestone gas. It killed her." Devin kept his back straight and his face blank. No emotion crossed his face.
"Why did she inhale vengestone gas? I thought Lloyd and Huntress were the ones being experimented on. They're still alive!" Soar didn't know how to feel. He wasn't an emotional person. But he was devoted to his friends, though they were few and far between. He didn't necessarily count Quake as a friend, but she was an ally.
Devin said nothing. That only caused Soar's anger to grow.
"What did you do?" Soar rose onto his tiptoes as he began to float off the ground.
"She disobeyed orders!" Devin yelled at Soar. "I had to show her who's in charge. It hadn't killed the prisoners. They recovered with elemental powers still intact. How was I supposed to know it would kill Quake?"
"Huntress and Lloyd are eighteen! Quake was fifteen! Vengestone isn't going to have the same effects on all of them."
"I wonder how it would affect you." Cassandra tilted her head in a threatening manner.
Soar took a step back, "Glitch is in charge, you didn't have to show Quake anything."
"She works here! She's ours!"
"Correction! She worked here. She was yours. She's dead now. Because of you!" Soar spat. "Glitch is going to be furious when he hears about this."
