It was the next day and the night before had been pretty unforgettable. And not in a good way. Brooklynn had a completely different opinion on Topper now. The guy that she thought was extremely loyal and unproblematic wasn't as unproblematic as she thought.

Brooklynn was glad that JJ did what he did, but she still felt a little off around him today. She also felt extremely guilty. It was her fault that the whole thing happened.

She had driven herself home and spent the night at Rafe's house. It was like their conversation from earlier never happened. He was gentle towards Brooklynn and held her close when they went to sleep.

It was always like that. Like nothing ever happened

Brooklynn, Kiara, Pope and JJ were all chilling in the open shed outside the Chateau. Brooklynn was threading a bracelet on the couch next to Kiara who was playing the bongos. Pope was sitting on the ground reading a novel while JJ was standing just outside the shed throwing rocks into the water.

John B walked out of the Chateau on his way to the open shed with a pack of beers in his hands, "Look, I'm calling it off. Alright? Peterkin said that if I stay out of the marsh, she'll help me with DCS."

He tossed the beers onto the table and then stood before the other 4.

"You believed her?" JJ asked, turning his attention to his friends.

"Yes, I believe her, JJ."

"An actual cop, John B. You believed a cop."

"Look, all I gotta do is stay out of the marsh for a couple of days and she'll help me out. And it doesn't help that your ass was the one who was shooting a gun!"

"You know what I should've done, man? I should've just let Topper drown your ass."

"Oh, yeah, 'cause Topper was gonna drown me?"

"Sure looked like it."

"Yeah, actually, John B. He even said he would. 'Don't make me drown you like your old man', remember?" Brooklynn asked, butting in.

John B scoffed at her, about to argue back but JJ spoke before he could.

"They always win. Don't they, man?" JJ said, changing his angry tone entirely.

JJ walked into the shed and leaned onto one of the support poles.

"Kooks versus pogues. They always, always win!" JJ said, punching a hanging light. "Goddamn!"

"Hey, JJ. Calm down, it's alright-" Brooklynn started.

"No, Brook. It isn't 'alright'! It is not! They don't want us to go down into the marsh. That means there's something valuable down there," JJ said then pointing to John B, "and you know it!"
