CHAPTER 33 – THE DANCE
SYDNEY BROUGHT them to one of the biggest ice rink in New York. She said that this is where is going to perform to impress Sydney's soon-to-be fiancé.
She felt a bit nervous because she hadn't done any figure skating in quite a long time and Sydney brought her here out of a whim, without any prior preparations. She did not practice any routine.
Maybe she'll just have to something she has done before.
When they entered inside, Mia was surprised to see the whole place decorated elaborately; three crystal chandeliers hanging on the ceiling above illuminating the entire place with its soft light, pink and peach colored flowers are around every corner, beautifully set to fill the place with romantic vibe.
The place is certainly a venue for a marriage proposal. Simple, yet romantic, her kind of thing. Although, it doesn't really fit Sydney's preferences.
Sydney led them to the spot where the judges are usually seated after she finished wearing the skates that Sydney begged her to. She was still unsure of performing in front of other people after such a long time.
All of a sudden, all the lights went off leaving the rink in complete darkness.
Mia immediately searched for her two companions. "Viane? Sydney? Where are you two?"
"Just stay where you are Mia. We'll just be over here." Sydney answered her making her sigh in relief.
Then, a small light from the chandelier illuminated the room, only making the rink visible. Pink rose petals were scattered everywhere except for the skating rink itself.
And to her surprise, Mateo was in the middle of the ice, standing there wearing a white tuxedo and a pair of skate shoes which confused her because as what she remembers, Aunt Luciana said that Mateo promised to himself that he is not going to step on the ice ever again since he could not balance on it.
Also, wasn't he just in the jewellery store with them earlier?
She saw him look at her direction and their eyes met. Her heart skipped a beat. Mateo seemed nervous.
He arranged his tie and she noticed that his legs are a bit shaky.
She wondered what on earth is her boss doing standing in the middle of the ice rink. Is he going to dance? She thought that she is going to be the one dancing for Sydney's proposal.
To answer her question, a soft familiar music played out of nowhere. It was the music from her most favourite programme when she was in the Russian Rostelcom Nationals!
To her surprise once again, Mateo started dancing to the song. He tried to glide at some point or another, and thankfully, he was dancing just fine.
It was a weird dance though. She couldn't understand his movements. The directions of his skates move here and there. And Mia would always flinch whenever Mateo falls down the ice after a wrong step, then worry would consume her.
Clearly, he is not that used to skating, yet. But then, Mateo would always stand up with a red embarrassed face or probably because of the cold and continue his dance.
He continued dancing with a lot of falls, but he was still able to regain himself and managed to get back up to his feet. It's like he was dedicated to finish his dance no matter what.
One final glide towards the middle of the rink and Mateo finished his dance, catching his breath afterwards. Then he looks at her again with a grin on his face.
Mia started to run towards him. She was right at the entrance of the rink when Mateo raised his hand that made her pause on her steps.
"Mia, Sweetie, stay where you are, or you wouldn't see it."
'See what?'
"Mia, I know that I've always been an asshole. I've always taken you for granted as a secretary even though you have always been there for me. I know that I will never deserve you Sweetie. I did all sorts of bad things to you and to our babies. I rejected you so many times. I did not believe you so many times. Heck! I even misjudge you so many times despite all the years I've known you. And you almost gave up on me if I hadn't realized who you really are in my life."
Mia felt her eyes tear up because of his words. She could feel the sincerity he has with every word.
She remembered those times. The happy times she had with Mateo as his secretary, the time when she got scared when he found out about the babies, the everyday rejections. Still, she kept on loving him. Because for her, no matter what he does, her heart will always beat for him.
"But it's a good thing that you didn't. And I'm so thankful to everyone who made me realize how much I needed you in my life. I'm sorry for saying this but, I'm going to hold on to you and cling to you for the rest of our lives."
She chuckled because of that.
"You might find me obsessive and addicted to you, but I don't care. You are mine and I would never let any man take you away from me."
"So Mia...my sweetie...the mother of my children. And if God will allow, the mother of my other future children..."
Mia's eyes widen and her heart pounded even faster when Mateo knelt on one knee, in the middle of the ice and took a box from his inner coat and opened it in front of her, revealing a simple but very beautiful engagement ring.
