Everything slowed down. My eyes took in the scene playing before my eyes. The teacher had lunged on another student. Blood was everywhere.
"JAMES. We have to go now!" Rose yanked my arm pulling me back in reality.
We ran into the hall. "James we're out in the open we have to find a place where we can defend."
" Yes I agree but my first priority is family."
Cool fingers grabbed my face. " No our first priority is staying alive."
The hall seemed endless. We kept running and running.
The gym doors were being held opened and teachers were leading students in.
"OVER HERE!" We headed in the direction of the teacher.
The doors were locked from the inside. Bleachers were pressed against the doors. But that didn't stop our fear.
"Now listen." The principle stepped in the middle of the gym. "I know you're afraid but there's no need to panic. Help is on the way...so just stay civilized."
"You can't possibly believe that sir. It isn't anything civilized about tearing someone face off with your teeth." The boy who spoke was in one of my classes. I can't recall what exactly.
"Now ...now calm down. I insure you that you're safe."
"Sir are you god."
"No. What's your point." He wiped sleeve across his balding head.
The boy fist clenched. "Then you can't possibly know when it's your time."
* BAM*
I pulled Rose closer to me in the corner. The doors been giving in slowly one more hit and...
*BAM*
These things came ruining in. This time more than one. Students...teachers.... Parents.
A body collided in mine. It's putrid breath in my face. No I can't die.
I flipped over on top. Its like an reaction. Some auto drive I didn't know I had. My hands tangled in the hair of the thing that was trying to bite me. My hands raised with its head and slammed down. Over and over again.
"James help!" Rose were being dragged.
In just a second I was there repeating what I did last time. Blood spraying my body. The soft rotten flesh squeezed in my hands.
We ran through the school. In here was our safest bet.
My fingers were interlocked with Roses. "The ela room. Its windows are bulletproof and its a good hiding place!"
The room was empty. The silence taunted me and tears stung my eyes. "I killed someone." I killed a person!
"You had to do what you had to do. Don't beat yourself up." I felt a squeeze on my shoulder.
"You don't understand. I killed a human."
" The thing you killed was far from human. Trust me."
Tears poured down my face. I didn't kill a person...I killed something. And that made it real.
The noise eventually came back at our door. It must have been plenty of those things because I heard cracking.
"What are we going to do?" My voice was barely a whisper.
"We're going to survive...."
"No matter what."
