Rehan- The Nostalgic

"I think I may have found something." Kieran said. It's a cold Saturday afternoon. The three of us were hanging out, as usual, in Samaira's apartment. Samaira was studying, I was writing, while Kieran was... well... doing computer stuff. I still wasn't sure what his major was.

Forensic... computers?

I made a mental note to ask him later, at a better time.

Kieran showed Samaira and I his computer.

"I was trying to look through the FBI's databases for the case, but with too many security firewalls, I was worried I was gonna get caught."

"You were hacking into the FBI's databases?" Samaira asked, shocked.

"Well...." Kieran said. "Too put it bluntly, yes. It's for a good cause, anyways."

"What did you find?" I asked, trying to change the subject, but it earned me a glare from my sister.

"Apparently there was this huge and infamous case a few years back." Kieran said. "Apparently Kashan and Michael were the lead investigators. In the crime world of New York, there was this big drug business. A lot of people died from overdoses and Fentanyl- laced prescriptions. The FBI got involved, and they solved the case within two years. The news spread globally."

"Yeah, I think I remember that." Samaira said. "Dad was always away at work during that time. We barely saw him." I was about to share my thoughts, when an interesting flashback occurred.

Suddenly, I wasn't in Samaira's apartment, but in a strange large room. There were a lot of people, whose faces I could not see.

Where was I?

All I felt was fear. It was a certain kind of fear, the one that seems as if there's this big pressure on your chest, so big that you couldn't breathe. It felt cold too, like little sharp needles.

And just like that... it was over, and I realized that Samaira was calling my name.

"...Rehan?" She asked, her eyes filled with concern. "Are you okay?" I jolted as Kieran lightly touched my shoulder, handing me a glass of water. I finished the glass within a few minutes.

"What happened?" Samaira asked, still worried.

"It's nothing." I said.

Write it down.

Almost like I was a machine, I immediately stood up and went to my bag, rummaging until I found the journal. I took the pen that was attached to the book and scribbled down the memory.

"Rehan, what happened?" Samaira repeated her question.

"Just another memory." I said. "I had to write it down before I forgot."

"What was the memory?" Kieran asked. I looked at the two of them, the two friends who wanted answers.

No.

Now is not the time to bring this up. It'll only confuse them more, just like it had confused me.

"It doesn't matter." I said, putting the notebook back.

"But Rehan-" Samaira protested.

"What about the witness I tried to talk to?" I said, changing the subject. "Frank Danielson, was his name. Maybe he's another lead?"

"Oh, right." Samaira said, her voice soft. I knew she would want to know about the flashbacks, but now is not the time to tell her.

"Witness?" Kieran asked.

"A man named Frank Danielson contacted me, saying that he saw what happened in our family's flower shop." I explained. "We planned to meet at the Maple Cafe to talk, but when I went there, he never showed up."

"Hm, that doesn't sound good." Kieran said.

"You said you had his address, right?" Samaira asked. "Maybe we could check up on him, make sure he's okay?"

"I think that sounds like a good idea." I said. "He hasn't contacted me in a while. I just want to make sure everything is fine."

"Why don't we go now?" Kieran said. "If you both are free?"

"I'm all caught up on work." Samaira said.

"Same." I said.

"Great!" Kieran said. "Then, let's go!"
