I knelt down beside Spirit, tears hot and angry streaming down my cheeks as I examined the bloody cuts. They were deep, one running from his shoulder down to his leg. He had three on his rump and another on his neck.

The blood had stained his jet black coat an ugly coppery shade.

Suddenly, I could hear movement coming from the trees close by. Was it the cougar again?

Dakota, one of the ranches horses, emerged from the trees, Uncle John mounted on his back.

"Uncle?" I gasped. My heartbeat was racing.

"Amy!" He threw himself off of Dakota, running over to me and pulling me into a hug, which I accepted. "What on earth.." He trailed off when he saw Spirit's deep gashes.

"The cougar got him!" I burst out suddenly. "The cougar.. he got Spirit! We have to help him Uncle, please!" The tears returned, flowing like a raging river down my face.

"Amy, slow down," I could feel John's large warm hand over mine. "Tell me again, what happened? And why are you out here?"

I quickly relayed my story right from the beginning: the day I first saw Spirit, my secret outings, the cougar- everything.

"So," John said finally. "This is a wild horse?" He looked at Spirit and back at me, a strange... sadness in his eyes.

"Yes," I breathed. "Spirit... and I love him. Please, Uncle, we have to help him."
