The door opened with a creak. Coach Wilson stepped inside and punched something into a keyboard. The lights flickered out, and a few kids screamed. I gave my eyes time to adjust to the dim light, then followed the coach's footsteps to the center of the gym. I may have jumped a little when she broke the silence.
"Today you will learn how to send up a flare. This comes in handy if you are lost or need help when on a mission," she said. Okay, so they had missions here. But I had absolutely no idea how to do this. "Since you're new, I'll let two of you do this. Where's our other new student?" coach Wilson yelled. "Where's Kayla?" Wait a minute, I thought. Kayla was the name of my best friend from San Antonio. She lived three hours away from Houston. There was no way it was her.
Well, I guess there was some way, because just then Kayla stepped down from the crowded bleachers.
At first, I wasn't sure it was really her. Wisps of Kayla's blond hair were barely visible in the murky light. Her eyes glittered mischievously. I knew those eyes. Like mine, they changed color, though her's were paler. But once she was close enough for me to see her face, I recognized the freckles on her nose and the silver braces on her teeth. It was definitely Kayla. We hugged. I had missed her so much, I rarely got to see her. We didn't even bother asking one another what they were doing here. Kayla and I can practically read each other's thoughts.
The coach cleared her throat and turned to face us. "As I was saying. You girls both know how to use the Light?" She asked. We both held out our hand and let Light swirl above our palm in response. "Good." She demonstrated the trick, but after a while Kayla and I got bored and started making faces at each other. We got away with it for a good ten minutes, but then it was time to do it ourselves. I swallowed my fear and stepped forward. I think coach Wilson had said something about relaxing? That was a little hard to do with a bunch of older, more experienced kids staring at me.
Turns out, Kayla was actually listening. That girl saved my life. Well, not my life, but you know what I mean. She mimed instructions behind coach Wilson's back, and I mirrored her movements. The coach assured me that everything was okay, not many people are skilled enough to get something right on their first try.
But right at that moment, something inside me clicked and color exploded from my hand. It was like a silent, miniature firework display indoors. I gasped and yanked my hand back. Just as soon as it had started, it stopped. The whole room was completely silent. Right when I thought the quiet couldn't get any quieter, the bell rang. Saved by the bell. Thank god.
"FaceTime me after this, okay?" Kayla pleaded before rushing out of the gym. I watched my best friend run into the crowd of Entranced. Smiling to myself, I pulled my backpack over my shoulders and walked after her into the hallway in search of my dorm.
Sorry this took me so long to write! I went on vacation and didn't have time. I'm also sorry for not commenting or voting for anything on Wattpad. Something is messed up with my account and it won't let me. I appreciate you all so much. Thanks!
