I assume elves of the same gender (also side note, do trans/non-binary elves exist?) don't appear on each other's match list cause you know, it's about genetics. Also the bodyguards don't exist in this story because the neverseen was defeated

Sophie Foster was officially bored. Seriously, how long had it been since that happened? She must've just not known what to do in her free time now that the neverseen had been defeated.

So obviously Sophie was ecstatic when someone familiar walked through the door to her giant yet boring room. She grinned at her best friend.

Her grin faded when she noticed he didn't have one in return. "Dex, what's wrong?" She patted the spot next to her so he would come closer.

"So..." He started, fidgeting with his hands. "I have something to tell you. I thought you'd probably understand best since humans tend to be better about this stuff than elves."

An elf admitting huamns were better at something? When has that ever happened?

He didn't continue for a moment. He took a deep breath.

"Okay, so," He finally continued. "Obviously you remember when we... kissed." How could she forget? "Well since I've had more time to think about a lot of things, I've realized there was another reason that felt wrong. It's not just because we weren't meant to be...It's because I'm not meant to be with any girl."

Sophie hoped her cheeks weren't as red as they usually were when her kiss with Dex was brought up. That would've made what she wanted to say next very unconvincing. "Dex, I'm glad you trusted me enough to tell me this. I haven't really thought about matchmaking in terms of that. I guess it's even worse than I originally thought." She smiled sadly.

Dex gave an even sadder smile back. "I guess we're both unmatchable now."

"Were you really gonna register anyway though?" Sophie had to ask. "I remember a few years ago you said you might not."

"This just feels different than choosing not to register though, you know?" Dex replied.

Sophie did know. Finding out she was unmatchable probably made her feel a million times worse than choosing not to register at all would have.

"But also..." He didn't seem to want to continue but he did anyway. "My parents are a bad match and I turned out to be...gay right?" He took a deep breath. "Wouldn't this make their reputation worse? Like even more than just choosing not to register would."

"I get why you might think that," Sophie admitted. "But even if it does, that's in no way your fault. Plus your family strong, they can definitely handle it."

"You really think so?" He asked quietly.

"I do." Sophie replied. "And I know something that might make you feel better."

"Really?"

"How do you feel about teleporting to the forbidden cities?" She asked, holding out her hand for him to get up.

"The forbidden cities?" He repeated. "Why?"

"Because," She answered. "It's pride month."

"Pride month?" Dex repeated her words again. "What's that?"

"It's where humans celebrate queer people with rainbows and stuff." She pulled him towards the cliffs outside.

"What do rainbows have to do with being gay?" Dex questioned. Sophie shrugged. "Just something humans came up with?" Sophie nodded.

Sophie had decided she needed to take Dex somewhere she was sure would live up to his expectations. The first place she thought of to buy him some pride gear was Provincetown. When they arrived she led him to an ATM.

"Can you do your technopath thing you did in Paris?" She asked. "Pretty sure we're gonna need some money."

"Is a thousand enough?" He asked, confusing Sophie with whatever he was pressing to do this. "I forget how much we needed last time."

"That's more than enough." Sophie answered as he handed her half of it.

Sophie smiled as she led him down commercial street with its many shops. Almost all of them having some sort of pride flag, if not multiple flags, by their doors and in their windows.

They found what they wanted in the first shop they entered, but decided to explore more of them anyway. They walked down pretty much the whole street and decided to go sit by one of the many restaurants to catch the breaths.

"Thank you." Dex told her after a few minutes of not awkward silence. "I had a lot of fun, and the best part is most elves probably don't know what this stuff means!"

"Oh yeah, that's right it's just a human thing." She sighed. "But for the record I don't think anyone you're close with would care."

"I know," He admitted. "But that doesn't make it any less scary to tell them. I will eventually, but I just wanna go slow."

Sophie nodded. "That's fair. If you ever need to do this again just let me know. I'd illegally teleport with you any day."

Dex grinned. "You know it's not technically illegal for you if a councilor said it was ok."

"It's still something that's illegal for most people."

"Well most people also can't teleport so..." She laughed. "But also, I thought you said it was pride month, so wouldn't we not be able to do this any other month?"

"It is pride month," Sophie agreed. "But this specific town is pretty close to this all year around, in fact it might be better to come when it's not so crowded."

"I'll keep this in mind," Dex said, smiling as they stood up, ready to go back home. "Again, thank you, I don't know how many times I can say that.'

"No problem Dex." She smiled, taking his hand. "That's what best friends are for."
