The apartment I will now live in was a small but beautiful and clean.

Definitely better than what I used to call home.

Mrs. Morales manages to keep this place tidy.

"I'm sorry we don't have a room for you. I'll talk to Miles before possibly moving you into his room" Rio says, moving a curly strand of hair out of her face.

I smile warmly and meet eyes with Rio "It's fine, Mrs. Morales. I can sleep on the couch. It looks rather comfy" I suggest.

...I mean I wasn't lying

Rio sighs and places a hand on my shoulder before walking past me, "Are you hungry, mija? I made arroz con frijoles"

I shake my head immediately, "No I'm okay. Thank you"

I stand awkwardly, continuing to grip my backpack. The enterance door opens quickly.

A familiar boy with braids closes the door behind him.

"Hola, Mami" Miles says. He gazes up and his brown eyes meet mine.

The silence was incredibly loud as we stare at each other in confusion and shock.

Rio glances at both of us, recognizing the tension. "Oh, Miles, Mijo, I signed up for the Brooklyn Foster Care program. You're always out, I thought some company would bring us together. This is (Y/n)" Mrs. Morales states.

Miles' gaze softens as he looks at his mother, who was smiling sadly.

"uhm. I made food, Miles," Rio said, her voice unconsciously getting quiet and higher pitched. The boy only shook his head "nah i'm good, mami. I'm going out later"

Rio put her hands on her waist "What could you possibly need to be doing at night in the city! It's dangerous." Miles sends her a blank stare "It's important." he responds bluntly.

I lean against the table and fiddle with my fingers.

"Bring Y/n. I want you two to get to know each other. You aren't going if she isn't" Rio orders, staring at her son angrily.

Miles' eyes trail to me. He scowled. Something about his eyes said that he's been through a lot. He looked almost unemotional.

Miles then looks back at his mom, "No. She can't come."

"And why is that Miles" Rio asks.

"Mami, I need to do this alone with uncle Aaron. Yknow? Tio, sobrino bonding" Miles says, looking at the floor, then meeting eyes with Rio. It was obvious he was coming up with things to convince her.

Mrs. Morales gives him a look of confusion "Mijo, you spend a lot of time with him. Try to spend time with Y/n. Who knows. Maybe you'll like her"

Awkward.

Miles scoffs

After a moment of silence, he clenches his jaw "fine. She can come with" He gives me one last glance, and walks into his room.

After that interaction, the tension of the room was released. I focus my attention back to Rio. She leans her arms on the table and lets out a stressed sigh as her fingers run through her curly hair.

"I love Miles, but he's been acting off after...well, his dad died. Just, be patient with him, ok?" Mrs. Morales says sweetly.

I look into her eyes. It appears as if she hasn't been getting much sleep lately. "Of course"

'It won't be too bad...'

Oh, how I was wrong.
