There is no safe zone? Then what point is it to travel a fucking four month journey to find out that the place I'm going to doesn't even p exist?
"What?", I practically yell, "What do you mean?"
Jesse sits down in a Lazy Boy chair across from me.
"Look", he says, "When this all started, the government told everyone to get to large cities, like Philadelphia. They promised food, shelter, protection, whatever people needed. But, piling everyone into one city was a mistake. All that did just put all the food in one place. So many biters came and killed everyone. Grace and I found a car and made it out, but...our parents didn't."
I turn to look at Grace, who wipes a tear from her cheek.
"We've been on our own ever since", she uters. Jesse gets up from the chair and goes over to hug Grace just as she starts to sob loudly.I feel sorry for them, but at the same time I'm filled with anger. "Look", I say, "I really don't want to be rude or anything, but you two need to suck it up."
Jesse and Grace look at me with confused expressions."You two act like you're the only ones who've lost someone. I'm all by myself god dammit! I've been trying to get to Philadelphia for four months, looking for my brother and I may never see him again!"
I couldn't hold in the anger anymore as my eyes started to water. "I'm sorry that you lost your parents, really I am, but there's someone out there who really needs me, and I need him. I don't really care that my ankle is frickin' twisted, I'm going to find him. I lost my parents too, and Anthony is all I have left."
Neither of them say anything. After a minute of silence, I say, "I understand if you don't want me to stay here anymore. I'll leave as soon as you want me to."
I then limp out of the living room, down the hall and to the bedroom, closing the door behind me. I throw myself onto the soft surface of the bed. What am I going to do?If there's no safe zone, what's the point of coming all the way over here? Here I am, lying on the bed, when someone knocks on the door. "Come in", I say. It's Jesse.
"You can still stay with us if you want", he says. I don't know, maybe I should. I think I'll leave in a few days.
"Okay. I'll stay."
