Chapter 17: Chopping down some trees

Onceler's POV

I was inside my tent with Rose brushing her long blonde hair, sketching out my idea of a thneed factory! I made sure to make it look comfortable.

"What do you think Rose?" I turned around to see her. She looked at my sketch and her eyes widened.

"Wow, that looks marvelous dear" she said smiling and looking at me.

"I know right? I'm a genius....I'm very proud of myself" I said looking at my masterpiece of drawing, then my wolf instinct hit me and turned around and all of a sudden, my mom popped out from the open window in front of me.

"Oncie, we've got ourselves a slight problem" she said kindly.

"Problem?" I asked her and heard Rose stopped brushing her hair.

"Mhm, You see... we're not making thneeds fast enough" she said, I tapped my lip with my pencil as I looked at my uncle pulling a big amount of tufts and my brothers taking them from a tree with a new invention I made.

"Well, what else could we do?" I asked her.

"Well...this just came to me...we could always tart chopping down the trees" she said smiling at me. I got shocked at what just she said and I could sense Rosemary was also shocked that even she dropped her brush. I knew that didn't make her any happy.

"....What?" I asked her again if what she said was just my imagination.

"Oncie, you are running a business now! Do what's best for the company, and your mama" Mom said with a little loud tone. Then I glanced at Rose who was speechless.

"Umm Mom? Could you let us talk for a moment? Just few seconds" I said and she nodded and walk away not far away from my tent.

" Oncie, No" Rose said looking at me.

"But Rose, she was right in something, we need to make thneeds faster" I said.

"But you can't just make it faster without chopping down the trees?" she said getting up from the bed.

"You saw the same as I did. That takes a lot of time. Please, just a few trees and that's it" I said and she looked at me.

" *sigh* Fine" she said and I hugged her.

I called my mom back and she came back to be in front of me.

"So? You will do it?" Mom asked me.

"Well, yes, chopping down some trees won't cause trouble" I said and a smile appeared on her face.

"That's my Oncie!" she said and hugged me. I looked at Rose and she was a little sad about, but when she noticed me she turned around and went outside.

Rosemary's POV

This is a so bad! I can't believe his mother told him to do that! He promised to not chopped down the trees! He's a Wolfwalker too! We exist to protect this forest, not to destroy it! I was completely focus on my thoughts of what happened but then saw Onceler's twin brothers take axes and started chopping some trees like it was a game. I gasped terrified, I started getting mad and I could feel my wolf spirit was starting to come out but then I thought of Oncie's words from later and calm down a little. I saw my father trying to stop them but Grizelda stopped him and picked him up.

"No! That's my Father! Let him go!" I said and run and grabbed him and hugged him close.

"Rose! What's happening?! And you! Sir! I need to talk with your boss" he said.

"Father......he said he will chopped down some trees....I told him no but..... I don't know" I said to him looking at me worried. I looked at the tent's window where Onceler was, he was looking at me worried but then his mother called him and leave. That woman is taking him to the wrong way and he is falling for it.

At night, as a wolf  I tried to talk to him but he was not in the forest and noticed that he hasn't even sleep yet. I put my front paws on his open window and saw him still sketching.

"Once, what are you doing?" I said and he quickly looked at me.

"Rose! What are you doing here? You have to go away from here. For me I understand you but for my family, you are barking" he said whispering and getting close to me.

"Onceler, why did you let your aunt treat my father like that?" I asked him whispering now and he sighed.

"I know but my mom was calling me and I couldn't stop her. I'm sorry" Once said.

"Onceler....you know I love you so much, but what happened with all the things your mom said? Now that you are successful she treats you good, don't you think that's weird?" I said looking serious at him.

"But she said it herself, she always believed in me, she just said those hurtful things so I could think bigger, be more intelligent and dream for this day. Aren't you happy that I finally did something good?" he said rubbing my head softly.

" Of course I am, but I also want the best for my big wolf. I don't want you to hurt the place we met each other. Please, promise me that" I said with my ears down. He looked at me for a moment but smile.

"I promise" he said touching my forehead with his and then kiss it.

"Thank you, now go to sleep. You can continue that tomorrow" I said

"You are right. Also, remember that tonight I can't stay with you all night. I don't want my family to see that there are wolves here" he said and I nodded. He went to sleep and quietly we ran far away from the tents.
