I woke up to people yelling. The blankets were pulled off of me by my annoying twin brother, Uriah. "Uri, let me sleep.", I complained. "Can't Tris, today's Choosing Ceremony." My head bolted up. Crap! I forgot. I quickly got ready and ran to the train with everyone else. Last week was the Aptitude Test. I got divergent, which is apparently so bad that some people want to kill them. Crap, I'm in trouble, I can't hide anything, especially something this important.
At the Hub, which is were the Choosing Ceremony is, I was right next to Uri. Not telling him I'm divergent is really hard. We never keep secrets from each other. Ever.
He chooses before me since we're going reverse-alphabetical. I can't live without my twin, so I'm going where he is. Even if it is the stiffs. Stiffs are what the Dauntless call the Abnegation.
Jeanine Matthews was the Erudite council-person, who was doing the Choosing Ceremony this year. "Uriah Pedrad", she called. He stepped up and took the knife. His blood sizzled on the hot rocks symbolizing Dauntless.
I should be worried now. Natalie Prior the woman who did my test told me to pick any but Dauntless. They kill all the Dauntless they find. I'm called and I go up. I'm not going to pick Dauntless, I just can't. But can I leave my brothers? Uri gives me a reassuring smile as he sits with our faction. I know what I will choose. I take the knife and cut my palm. My blood sizzles on the rocks.
I'm going to die. At least I'm with Uri and Zeke, also mom.
