𝐢𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐬 the morning of the moving. me and my family were moving to the uk for a new start, we had lived in somalia my whole life, and i didn't really know how to speak english, only a couple fresh words everyone should know like "hello" and "how are you?".
my mother decided it would be a good idea to move since our father had just left for this girl in america, and my mother didn't want to stay in a country full of memories of him, so, we decided to move.
"are you ready?" my mother asked me, testing out her new english accent. although i didn't understand anything she was saying, i just nodded.
"kaalay diyaar ma tahay" (come on, are you ready?) she asked me, and i finally understood what she was trying to ask me. i nodded and grabbed a couple of boxes from my room, the lighter ones, and rushed downstairs.
i had a flight of around 8 hours, my mother had got me to download this app named 'duolingo' so i could learn english during the flight.
i was 21 at the time of the moving, although i did not live with my mother, i still had a room with essentials and clothes in her house, and although i wanted to stay in somalia, i didnt have any relatives where i lived, they were more further away, so i just decided to go with my mother.

"12D, 13D, 14D, 15E, 16E, 17E." the lady gave us our tickets back as we boarded the flight and showed us where to sit. this was going to be a long flight, as i had to sit next to my brother, ayaan and my sister, arella.
we all sat down, and i put my headphones in and clicked the app my mother basically forced me to download. i logged onto it and started the english lesson, at first it was the basics, and then, it was hard words, i was so confused, but i did it for the whole flight, as i wanted to speak to people in england, and actually understand them.

we finally landed in england, and we got odd the plane. we went through security, and went to collect our luggage, ours was taking extremely wrong, so i decided to go up to someone and say hi. i saw this man, he looked around my age, maybe 22? standing waiting for his luggage. he was on the phone. he was wearing a durag and a hoodie, so, i went up to him.
"hello!" i smiled and stood in front of him.
"hi?" he was confused, i get it, he looked up from his phone at me and had a faint smile, trying to be friendly.
"name my alana!" i recognised my mistake straight away, "no, my name is alana!" i smiled and hoped he wasn't freaked out.
"where are you from?" he asked me, luckily, my thick brain understood this.
"somalia."
"anigana" (me too) he said, and when i tell you, i had the biggest sigh of relief ever, i literally did.
"ilaahow runtii? hadaba ma aha in aan isku dayo in aan ku hadlo ingiriisiga hadda?" (oh my god really? so i do not have to keep trying to speak english now?) i smiled and grabbed his arm, i didn't mean to, but i am just an affectionate person, i love physical touch.. a lot.
"you do," he said, again, i understood and groaned, "but i can teach you?" i was lost, but just nodded. he handed me his phone, which i guess really indicates me putting my number into his contacts, so i did.
"alana!" my mother shouted, i looked at her to see all of the luggage loaded up onto one big trolley, so i turned around and just waved at him and jogged back to my mother.
although i only knew that guy for 10 minutes, i felt like it was love at first sight, you know? i feel like he could see it 𝐢𝐧 𝐦𝐲 𝐞𝐲𝐞𝐬.
