They came to the clearing where once upon a time they had played baseball. To think now if they wouldn't have played that day they wouldn't be in this mess. James, Victoria, and Laurent would've just moved through Forks unaware of the Cullens at all.
For this fight Jasper thought it would be best for Lena to stay in her human form so she would have the ability to use Jane's gift. It was one that she hadn't practiced since she had put Felix on his knees in Italy. But of course that meant she would have to be more careful. Carlisle wasn't sure what vampire venom would do to Lena while she wasn't a giant wolf. She had been bitten before by a vampire, her father. It laid her up for months and she almost was not able to walk again. Carlisle had concluded that it was the venom in her system that reaped havoc.
Lena stepped up to Emmett as he was the closest thing they had to a newborn attack. At first Jasper showed her how to fight hand to hand. It took her a minute but eventually she laid Emmett out flat on his back . Emmett was frustrated, not used to being beaten. But when it came to going up against Jasper, he was the one laying her out. He wasn't about to go easy on her as it was life or death for Lena to learn these skills but he was also careful not to hurt her. Edward and Bella had arrived in the clearing and not long after the wolf pack came to observe. Lena landed on her back as Caroline had tossed her over her shoulder, knocking the breath out of her. She laid there for a moment hoping that the few days was going to be enough to be ready. Jasper took Lena's hand and pulled her back up. "I want you to practice using your gift." He told her. Lena's eyes went wide and she shook her head. "I can't." She dropped her gaze but Jasper lifted her chin so her gaze met his. "You could never hurt me." He smiled reassuringly.
Lena let out a deep breath and concentrated on that burning feeling she had felt when Jane had inflicted it on her all those months ago before she projected it out on to Jasper but only for a moment. He went down on his knees from the agony. Lena crouched down so she was eye level with him, concern in her face. "I'm okay Darlin." Jasper told her as he got back up. "Paul thinks your over exaggerating Jasper. He thinks there's no way Lena can do that much damage." Edward interpreted for the large grey wolf who seemed to bark a laugh. Lena smirked. "Care to step up and try? If you're so sure it doesn't hurt that bad." Lena taunted. The big grey wolf got to his feet and came over, towering over Lena. Again, she projected that burning pain which made Paul drop to the ground, writhing and yelping. The pack all barked a laugh as Paul stalked back to his place. Embry then got up and trotted over to her, nudging her with his large head. "It's not a game Embry." She warned him. He rolled his big wolfy eyes at her and she sighed. "Okay but you asked for it." Lena used her gift on Embry and watched as he staggered, yelping. She stopped and heard Edward speak to Bella. "It's good for them to learn some humility. They're fine Bella." Lena wiped her dirty hands on her jeans and went over to Bella. "Never thought I'd have to use it again. But I guess now I'm glad Aro taught me." She sighed. "It'll be very useful." Edward agreed, his eyes focused on his brother teaching. It was nearing four in the morning when Jasper decided to call it quits for the night. They'd meet again the next day to do it all over again. Sam had made a special request for the pack to get the Cullens scents so there wouldn't be any confusion during the fight. Lena stood back from the line as the pack already had her scent. It didn't stop Embry from stopping in front of her. He pushed his big head into her and made a huffing sound, almost like a cat purring but rougher. She could feel the Cullens and the packs eyes on them but she ignored it. "I'll be fine. You just worry about keeping yourself safe." She told him. Sam growled a little and started to leave the clearing. "You better go. Don't wanna piss the boss off." She shoved him gently. "I'll see you tomorrow."
Lena turned to the Cullens as Embry left. They were all looking at her with odd expressions. "What?" She questioned. "I didn't realize you were so close with the mongrels." Emmett shrugged, speaking for everyone. "It's-complicated. Very long story." She sighed, figuring she would have to tell it now. "When you all left Embry was my only friend. We spent almost every day together. It gets complicated because of this phenomenon called Imprinting. It's when the wolves find their one true soulmate but more than that. Like what you all have in your mates." She started but was interrupted by Caroline. "Are you saying that you and Embry-?" Lena shook her head quickly. "Absolutely not. He thinks he has but it's not true. Sam has tried to tell him many times but he's very stubborn. Embry and I will only ever be friends." Her heart belonged to someone else. Lena looked to Jasper who seemed to be a little bit more than just relieved.
