The 7 of them sat in Mike's basement, figuring out the message.
"What was Will saying? Like home... Like home... but dark?"
" And empty."
"Empty and cold. Wait, did he say cold?"
"I don't know. The stupid radio kept going in and out."
"It's like riddles in the dark. Like home. Like his house? Or maybe like Hawkins."
" Upside down." they heard Eleven say
"What'd she say?"
"The Upside down. You know the thing Isabelle and I have been trying to tell you about for about 20 minutes but you both aren't listening. Except for Dustin."
" What?
"Upside down. When El showed us where Will was, she flipped the board over, remember? Upside down. Dark. Empty."
"Do you understand what he's talking about?"
"No." Dustin and Natalie said simultaneously
"Guys, come on, just think about it. When El took us to find Will, she took us to his house, right? Yeah. And he wasn't there. But what if he was there? What if we just couldn't see him? What if he was on the other side? What if this is Hawkins and... this is where Will is?"
"That's what Izzy and I have been saying for the past 20 minutes. The Upside Down is like the Vale of Shadows." Synthia said
"You know DnD?" Dustin asked
"Say anything and I'll kill you. Now the only way to get through is by a gate."
"And where would that be?"
After Will's funeral, Synthia was in Mike's Basement on babysitting duty while Isabelle was out finding "will's" medical records from the autopsy.
Synthia had been hearing them argue for the past 15 minutes. She finally started to listen when she heard
" I need to see your compasses."
Finally they were getting somewhere.
"Your compasses. All of your compasses, right now!"
"What's exciting about this?"
"He's finally telling you what I have been trying to this whole time."
"Well, they're all facing north, right?"
"Yeah, so?"
" Well, that's not true north."
" What do you mean?"
" I mean exactly what I just said. That's not true north. Are you both seriously this dense?"
"He's got a point." Synthia said
"The sun rises in the east, and it sets in the west. Right? Which means that's true north."
"So what you're saying is the compasses are broken."
"Do you idiots even understand how a compass works?" Synthia said
" Do you see a battery pack in this? No. No, you don't. Because it doesn't need one. The needle's naturally drawn to the Earth's magnetic North Pole. So what's wrong with them? Well, that's what I couldn't figure out, but then I remembered. You can change the direction of a compass with a magnet. If there's the presence of a more powerful magnetic field, the needle deflects to that power. And then I remembered what Mr. Clarke said. The gate would have so much power..."
"It could disrupt the electromagnetic field."
"Exactly."
"Meaning, if we follow the compasses' north..."
"They should lead us to the gate. Finally one of you idiots is learning something in this crappy situation." Synthia said
They were now walking down the train tracks, Synthia of course ahead of them. She was too busy thinking about what the fuck her life had become and making plans incase the damn demogorgen did show up while they were out looking for the gate.
When they reached what looked like a junkyard, Synthia started looking for the gate.
"There's nothing here." She called
"We're headed back home."
"What? Are you sure?"
" Yeah, I'm sure. Setting sun, right there. We looped right back around."
"And you're just realizing this now?"
" Why is this all on me?"
" Because you're the compass genius!"
" What do yours say?"
"North."
" Makes no damn sense. I mean I felt the interdimensional energy" Synthia said
"Maybe the gate moved."
" No, I don't think it's the gate. I think it's something else screwing with the compasses."
" Maybe it's something here."
" No, it has to be like a super magnet. "
"It's not a magnet. She's been acting weirder than normal. If she can slam doors with her mind, she can definitely screw up a compass."
"Why would she do that?"
" Because she's trying to sabotage our mission. Because she's a traitor!"
"Lucas, what are you doing?"
"You did it, didn't you?"
"Guys stop." Synthia said, as her empath and telepath abilities started overwhelming her
"You don't want us to reach the gate. You don't want us to find Will. "
"Lucas, come on, seriously, just leave her alone!"
"Admit it."
"Guys stop."
" No"
". Admit it!"
"Guys stop."
" Fresh blood. I knew it."
"Guys stop."
"Lucas, come on!"
" I saw her wiping her nose on the tracks! She was using her powers!"
"Guys stop."
"Bull! That's old blood. Right, El? Right, El?"
"It's not safe." She said
"I knew it."
"Guys!" Synthia said and a wave of orange light came out of her
"We need to focus on this mission. This isn't dnd, this is real life. So grow the hell up." She said, then walked away to calm down.
The party looked shocked and scared. They pushed her too far. She was right, this wasn't a game.
