Night 6: Ship Sailed

The boys struggled to get a fire going while the girls searched for anything that resembled food. There was a kitchen and dining room on the ship so it was possible something edible washed up.

They were able to scrounge up some dented cans of beans. Hitting it with a rock to open it would have to do.

They met back up at their shelter. Scraps of metal made up the roof and walls, propped up against trees. Cushions were ripped off of chairs for bedding. The wood of the chairs were used as kindling for a small fire.

They would all be sleeping close to each other but it was for the best. The night was rather breezy and they would need to keep warm.

With the few cans the girls had found, they took turns smashing it open and holding the can over the flames to heat up its contents. With no utensils, they would have to eat with their hands.

For Kuno and Shuutaro this was embarrassing. They could imagine what their families would say if they could see them now. Ironically, it gave them comfort. Their families were probably worried sick and waiting for their triumphant return.

Even more embarrassing was that Shuutaro could hardly move anymore. Putting together the shelter must've stretched out his wound. Without any stitches, it wouldn't be able to close properly. He groaned inwardly as he reached to take the can from Shinobu.

With limited resources, they were forced to share.

Shinobu watches him with glossy eyes. "Here." She scooped some food into her hand and held it in front of his mouth.

All he could do was stare at her hand. "Go on." she said. Reluctantly, Shuutaro quite literally ate out of her hand. His tongue brushed against her fingers. It was quite gross but Shinobu didn't care. The others weren't really watching anyway.

For how nice she was to him, he really didn't deserve her. "I could've died." Shuutaro said out of nowhere, hand on his bandaged abdomen.

"But you didn't—"

"By my own blade. How embarrassing. Tell me Shinobu," he looked at her, pursing his lips as he considered what he wanted to say next. "If I had died today, would you attend my funeral?"

Shinobu was taken aback. "Of course I would."

He chuckled softly, lowering his head. "You're too kind."

"Why wouldn't I?" Shinobu was genuinely curious as to why he would think the opposite. Yes he dreamed it, but why?

He couldn't look at her anymore. He was ashamed. "Because of how I have treated you. You deserve better."

Shinobu drew closer to him, trying to get a good look at his face as he hid from her. "What're you saying?"

"I love you."

Those three words promoted the attention of Nabiki and Kuno. They stopped whatever conversation— or lack therof— they were having. That was a confession they heard.

A confession... And no Aime.

"Shuutaro..."

"I love you and I can't be the man you need me to b—"

Smack!

Shinobu had slapped him across the face. Injury or not, she just gave him another one. "Stop it! I don't want to hear that!"

"Hate to ruin your little... Thing here," Nabiki gestured towards him and screwed up her nose. "But haven't you noticed that Miss Dream Demon didn't swoop in and take you two away?"

"You're right. We really are stuck here." Shuutaro deadpanned. He might as well die here if he doesn't get treatment.

Shinobu sulked. "We're never going home..."

"I got one, am glad to be stuck with you three." Kuno announced. "Fortunately, the four of us should be able to repopulate and continue our bloodlines. Our children shall mate."

Nabiki raised a brow. "Um, ew."

"And if we should somehow escape this island," Shuutaro added a bit more hopefully, "our children will be betrothed."

Nabiki glanced between the two boys. This can't be for real. "Why are you guys making plans?" she asked. "I'm pretty sure Shuutaro and Shinobu were just fighting."

There was silence as the boys realized she was right.

Shuutaro them reached over to place his hand on Shinobu's knee, hissing through the pain. "Shinobu, please allow me to make you a happy girl. I will work hard to become the man you deserve."

Kuno turned towards Nabiki with the intent to say something similar. One look on her face told her she was not having it. However, that was not going to stop him from getting the answers he wanted.

"Do you hate me Nabiki Tendo?"

Nabiki frowned slightly. "No."

"Then do you love me?"

Nabiki huffed. "Why would I?"

"That's what I would like to know." Kuno's hand twitched from him thinking about holding her hand.

Tracing circles in the sand with her finger, Nabiki kept her gaze away from his. "Why would you love me either?"

That was a simple answer. "You vex me, Nabiki Tendo."

"Is that it?"

"You challenge me for the man that I am. I realize that... I like being around you. Even if it hurts me so."

"Weird kink but okay."

Kuno's face flushed. "Be serious! I am wearing my heart on my sleeve for you! I'll give you all the money you want, just please consider it. Consider me, consider us."

Nabiki scoffs and flicks grains of sand off of her fingers. "After all you put my sister through?"

"I will make amends with Akane." Kuno promised.

"Hm."

"I know you like me," Kuno teased. "Love me even. Why else would you spend a lot of time with me? I don't blame you of course."

Nabiki rolled her eyes. "Oh shut up already will ya? If I say yes would you kiss me and stop embarrassing me?"

Kuno stopped immediately, unsure of what he had just heard. His eyes were wide. Did his ears decieve him? Nabiki Tendo asking him for a kiss? It couldn't be... Could it?

"Figures. I knew you weren't man enough." Nabiki shrugged to herself, as if she had proved a point.

"What—"

This conversation wouldn't continue as Nabiki stayed silent much to Kuno's dismay. The teens finish their pitiful dinner and lay next each other like sardines.

It was incredibly awkward but everyone was too tired to complain about it. It didn't take long for each to fall asleep.
