Despite his mother's insistence on burning the picture book completely, he took a picture out and kept it for himself.
It wasn't the picture with his father, nor the picture with the flame symbol but rather a simple picture with his mother. The picture was the last keepsake of his mother and he wasn't willing to let go of it.
He then folded the picture to a size that would fit in his pocket. While pocketing the picture, he turned around.
"Rest in peace mother."
He mumbled and left the scene.
In hopes of finding some people to inquire about the situation, he roamed around the streets.
Around the time, the carnage took place, he was holed up in the gutter. Thus, he had no prior knowledge about the ongoing situation.
And as a wise man once said 'knowledge is power'.
The same thing which he lacked at the present moment, making him completely vulnerable.
As he was investigating the surrounding, he witnessed more and more carcasses of people. Among them were few peoples whom he recognised and was familiar with.
"Uncle Han!"
He exclaimed in shock as he witnessed a body of middle aged man.
His lower half was completely burnt, but yet he somehow was holding on to his last breath.
Sol stormed towards him, in hopes on saving his life. As he neared him, he witnessed the burnt half of his body.
"No, no, no Uncle Han"
His eyes widened as he screamed in horror.
The horrifying sight of uncle Han terrified him, leaving him utterly speechless. Unable to move his limbs, he was petrified by the horrifying sight of uncle Han.
"Is that you Sol?"
Uncle Han murmured in a very low tone.
Uncle Han was one of those very few people who was considerate of his situation and helped him time and again.
After getting bullied by Ric and his gang, uncle Han would be the one who'd tend to his wounds. He would be the one to provide medicine for his sick mother.
Even though Sol couldn't afford to pay for the herbs, uncle Han would cheerfully smile at him and tell him that he could pay for it after he was old enough to do so. Even though he wouldn't mean it, he would say it just to ease up Sol's guilt of ripping him off.
Uncle Han who used to be a healer in the imperial army worked as a herbalist after his unfortunate retirement.
While working as a healer, he was severely injured in the battlefield and had to lose one of his arms. After he lost his arm, the empire declared him as a liability and thus he was dismissed from his position even though he could still faithfully carry out the task assigned for him.
After his dismissal, he was given few gold coins as a compensation for his services.
Having no prior skill except his knowledge of herbs, he started to trade on medicinal herbs with the compensation fee he was granted after his retirement.
Sol quickly grabbed uncle Han's hand after finding out that he was still alive.
"Uncle Han please speak to me, uncle Han."
He stammered.
"Uncle Han we need to get you treated as soon as possible."
Uncle Han tightly grabbed Sol's hand, just when he was about to move him.
Sol felt the tightening grip of Uncle Han and retracted his movement.
"You can't heal me my child. I'm beyond healing. I know the fact that I'm dying, afterall I'm a healer myself. It's even a miracle for me to survive this long after suffering such grave injuries."
Uncle Han spoke in his dying voice.
Even at the moment, when he was dying, he was still smiling. As if he was happy to end his suffering and leave for the better place.
Sol's eyes flooded with tears and yet he didn't speak of anything. He kept staring at uncle Han's smiling face.
"You're crying Sol?"
Uncle Han gently whispered with a smile on his face.
Sol couldn't say anything and continued to remain silent as he silently wept.
"Don't cry Sol. I'm sure you'll still be able to live well. And I'm happy that somebody is shedding tears for me in my dying moments. I'm happy that I was loved, Sol. So please bid me farewell with smile and not tears, Sol?"
Sol gently wiped off the tears of his face and forced a smile on his face.
"Thank you for loving me Sol-"
He took a last glance at the smiling face of Sol and took his final breath with tranquil look on his face.
Sol kept on holding his hands even after he stopped breathing.
Just then he felt the tremors in the ground. Followed by the tremors, he could hear faint noise of footsteps. The tremors got more violent with the prolongation of the footsteps.
"I'm sorry I couldn't give you a proper farewell Uncle Han."
He whispered as he let go of the hand of uncle Han.
He staggeringly rose up to look for the source of noise. Far in the east, dust screened out the entire sky dyeing the sky in the dusty colour.
"Is this the end of the world?"
He whispered as he startlingly stared at the raging dust in the far east.
The fogs of dust was rapidly approaching towards him as the footsteps got louder and tremors became more violent.
He hurriedly ran to the west to avoid getting soaked up in the marching dust storm.
Ric noticing the fleeing Sol, started to run as well. Despite not knowing the reason behind Sol's reaction, he simply copied him and began to run.
Agile body of Sol allowed him to move swiftly. Thus it didn't take long for Sol to pass Ric who was far ahead of him when they began to run.
"What the-"
Ric mumbled in shock as he witnessed the sight of Sol who ran past him, despite being far behind him.
Sol ignored his presence and continued to run without looking back.
"Aaaaahhhhh"
A scream reverberated all of a sudden.
He wanted to stop and look for the source of sound but he was too terrified to do so. Thus, he ignored the scream and solely focused on fleeing the ongoing situation.
Just then an arrow flew past him.
'What's that?'
He muttered.
Ignoring the arrow, he ran past the arrow.
Boooooom!
A loud noise came from the place where the arrow landed.
The shockwave of the bang blew him and pushed him forward.
"Aaaaaaaaaaaaa"
"What just happened?"
Whilst breathing heavily, he tried to get up.
His hands covered in bruises and abrasions, trembled as he used it to support himself to get up.
"Argh..."
He screamed, writhing in pain.
His hands gave out and he stumblingly fell down again. He could feel his whole body trembling and aching with agonizing pain.
Despite the agonizing pain, he gritted his teeth and tried to get.
'Get up! Get up! Get up!'
He mumbled as he tried to get up.
After continuous struggle, he finally got up on his knees. He forced himself to rise and finally he got up on his feet.
But he had no time to rejoice as his life was in danger at the moment.
[Woah this brat seriously got up with this much injury]
An unknown voice reverberated from behind him.
But before he could react to the anonymous voice, he was hit by something in his head.
Ting~~~
Instantly he lost his consciousness and fainted, upon receiving the blow on his head.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After a while, he regained his consciousness.
"Argh... ouch"
He felt a bulging pain in his head as soon as he regained his consciousness. He felt dizzy as he tried to get up.
"Where am I?"
He mumbled while he tried to get up.
He tried to open his eyes but his vision was blurry and he couldn't see properly.
Even though he stayed still, he could feel his body move without his will. He kept rolling and he could feel the occasional bumps.
"Just where am I?"
He muttered.
While holding his head, he slowly got up after relentless effort of getting up.
His vision was still blurry, thus he couldn't precisely identify his location.
He continuously rubbed his eyes.
Slowly his vision started to get clearer. As his vision got clearer, he found himself confided in a dark space. Tightly squeezed in a narrow space, he wasn't the only one present there.
He was accompanied by groups of other people. Most of them the same age as him, while some even younger than him and there were also people who looked much older than him.
He bewilderingly looked around him as he tried to locate his present location.
As he looked around, he noticed the looks filled with despair among some people who were awoke. There were also some people, who were still in a vegetative state.
By no means, the looks on their face provide him any kind of assurance.
But as he kept on inspecting, few things caught his attention. The first thing was that he was being held as a hostage and was taken somewhere in somekind of vehicle. The second thing was that he wasn't alone and was accompanied by several peoples.
The third thing was the gloomy atmosphere surrounding him.
While taking into consideration of all the things which he evaluated, he came to a conclusion that he was being abducted by some kind of organisation and was being held as a hostage.
And by no means, he found his present situation normal.
