I'd just arrived back after busy day of work, unlocking the door to the familiarity and comfort of home. it was filled with such nostalgia and memories, my sanctuary. All day I'd waited to see my girlfriend Jennie so we could celebrate our anniversary together. It was a special occasion we'd been planning for the past couple of months and I couldn't wait to surprise her a romantic evening.
Yet when I entered our apartment, it was oddly quiet. From the kitchen, Kuma came running up to me wagging his tail as I picked him up in my arms. "Hello Kuma, do you know where Jennie is?
He barked loudly as I chuckled, placing him down to make my way up the stairs towards the bedroom. As I wandered along the hallway, it seemed unusual that the house was so silent. For later this evening, Jennie and I had reservations at our favourite restaurant in the city. It was somewhere we'd been before and we fond memories of our time there.
Opening the door at the end of the hallway, I saw Jennie fast asleep on the bed surrounded by a fluffy blanket and a sea of pillows.
As I sat beside her, I noticed her forehead was sweaty and she was huddled up as if in pain. It worried me. As I brushed my hand against her cheek, she tiredly opened her eyes.
"Lili?" Her voice was croaky as she stirred awake, reaching for the bottle of water on the side.
"Hey Nini. Are you okay?" I asked in concern. She seemed a bit disorientated as if she'd been a sleep for a least a few hours.
She shook her head, trying to sit up but held her stomach as she winced in pain. "I don't feel well so I came home from work early. Jisoo drove me back got me some medicine on the way home from work."
"Why didn't you call me?" I said as I dashed to get a thermometer from the medical cupboard.
"I was going to but I fell asleep." She pouted. I took her temperature, reading the thermometer that showed she had a slight fever. As I helped her take some medicine and another few sips of water, I kissed her forehead before gently helping her to lay back down where she could get comfortable and sleep more.
"It's okay, I'll look after you." I whispered quietly so she could rest. She smiled but it soon turned into a frown when she glanced at the calender on the bedside table.
"We had plans, we were supposed to go for dinner." As she attempted to move again, I held her hand and shook my head.
"We're staying here so you can get better." I replied but she was still somewhat stubborn.
"But it's our anniversary-" She was defiant not to let it ruin the occasion but I cared about was making sure she felt better and was able to get some rest to recover.
I cupped her cheeks as her sad kitten eyes glanced at me in disappointment. "Whether we celebrate our anniverary in a fancy restaurant or here at home, it doesn't matter. It'll be special because it's you and me. All I want is to be with you."
Her eyes suddenly sparkled as she smiled shyly. I moved to lay beside her, cuddling her closely in a warm and comforting embrace.
"I love you." She whispered as she buried her face into my shoulder.
"I love you too, Jennie." And with those words, she fell asleep again as I smiled before I too became tired and fell asleep into a peaceful dreamland.
