I turn around abruptly to find a man standing before me. Even though it's midday out, It's almost as if the forest has made the world night. It looks as though tendrils of black shadows dance around his tanned skin tone.
"Who are you?" I ask meekly while staring at him like he's gonna hurt me. Because you honestly never know.
"Ahh wouldn't you like to know, little bird?" He feigns arrogance with a smirk.
"Well you are the one that's followed me," I say with an attitude which I normally don't to strangers.
"Touché," he says while nodding his head and coming closer to me.
"Now but this is my land your trespassing on. So actually maybe you've decided to follow me perhaps?" He asks me with a mischievous glint in his eye as he prowls even closer to me.
As he gets closer I take notice that he has almost shoulder length, very dark hair. It's as dark as the night skies with pulled back messy waves. He also has a scar running through his left eyebrow. His eyes oh well they are a different story he has very light brown eyes, a honeyed caramel color. With a dark five o'clock shadow and pink luscious lips. Oh my I think I've lost my mind.
I finally shake off staring at his beautiful face and say, "I've come here since I was little and nobody has owned this property. Also I'm no stalker." I lift my head up as best as I can since he's much taller than my 5'6 frame.
He suddenly is behind me and whispering in my ear to say, "as you may or may not know but I've bought this land as well as that house near the other side of the road." I gasp realizing that this is my Grammys neighbor that just bought the Victorian home. I never knew that this land was for sale as well as the house.
"Oh I just well nobody has bought that house in years and assumed this land belonged to nobody," I mumble out incoherently at being so stupid as to not realize obviously somebody owns this land. I start to pick up my things to leave the forest.
He gets down to pick up my book and reads the title. "Now I do fancy reading. How about we make a deal?" He asks while looking into my jaded green eyes. Normally I can read a persons emotion very well but with him it's hard. Intriguing.
"What kind of deal?" I ask feigning curiosity because I don't want to never see this place again.
He flips through the pages of my book and lifts his eyebrows to say, "a deal where I let you onto my land as long as you read to me?"
I look up at him like he has two heads and say, "what? To read? You don't seem like the type to read let alone have someone, read to you."
He frowns and says, "maybe you're right, maybe not? But I've just bought this house and have not a soul to listen to."
This whole encounter is odd because he's so gorgeous he could have anyone to spend time in his presence. Let alone me. I'm curious as well and I give in because this place is my one solace, and I'm not ready to give it up yet.
"Alright, you have yourself a deal," I have my hand outstretched ready to shake on it. Maybe I'm naive and he'll kill me later. Nope positive thoughts only Lora.
"Asmodeus and I'm glad you accept," he smiles down at me to shake my hand. Wow now that's a unique name.
"Alora but people call me just Lora," I tilt my head with an actual genuine smile.
"It is nice to meet you, Alora. Now I only wish for you to read to me at sundown every day. I will in favor grant you anytime to come to this pond." He tells me with a little bow which makes me laugh.
"And where exactly are we going to read?" I ask with a smile.
"Anywhere is fine by me. By this pond or in my house," he says and I immediately get excited because I've been wanting to see the inside of that house. Like come on the exterior is like a fantasy book readers dream come true.
"Deal but I leave to go back home in about a week and a half. I only visit this town because my Grammy lives here." I tell him.
He looks up at the sky as I see it's getting late in the day. "Well then we will make the most out of it. I'll see you tomorrow at noon," he says handing me back my book.
I look down at my book he handed back and was going to say something else but he walks off.
"Come now, Jesper." He calls out to the Raven I read to last night.
I can't believe it's his Raven and Jesper follows him and I just stand there dumbfounded. The bird liked me to read to it now this deal with Asmodeus? I'm crazy to agree but there is something quite interesting about him.
Lost in thought I hear my new neighbor shout to me, "until then, little bird." I take that as cue to leave.
I head back down a different path than him to retrieve my bike and I head on home to thoughts of Asmodeus.
