SEVEN - "EENY, MEENY, MINY..."

"Mommy's with the maggots now."

Ellie's words echoed across the room, echoing in their minds. It wouldn't stop.

It wouldn't ever again.

That sentence alone had been the most harrowing any of them had ever heard, gut wrenching in fact, so gut wrenching that they'd remember it for the rest of their lives; However, it hadn't been those five words alone that had really scared them, it was the questions they raised that brought them true terror.

Was Ellie really dead?

Was this someone else? Some thing else?

What the fuck was in her body?

The only thing that showed a semblance of truth in any one of their minds, when it came to the dead woman before them, were the similarities between her and what Lyds had witnessed in Danny's book.

It was almost uncanny.

The woman evidently looked like a corpse, enough of one that if any of the family hadn't practically seen her raise from the dead themselves they'd have assumed she was a zombie. But Lyds just kept thinking back to the woman half torn apart upon those bloodied pages, she couldn't stop seeing her in Ellie, she couldn't get it out, and just like that the girl rendered herself the cursed title of being the first to understand.

It was the fucking book...

They'd done this.

It was all their fault.

"Ellie! Stop it!" Lyds begged, stumbling over broken glass and Danny's feet. "Stop!"

The woman didn't seem to care for begging as she crawled from the bath tub. Nor did she seem to care for anything else at all, her grotesque smile told them that much. That smile could've been painted by the antichrist himself.

"Ellie's not home!" She laughed, and lunged for her son's feet.

"You keep away from him!" The blonde didn't hesitate to shield Danny with her body, forcing him back. "You keep away from us!"

Ellie didn't dare say another word. She only stared back at them with that same bloodied smile and that same void gaze. Perhaps it would've been better if she had become a zombie.

"What's wrong with her?" Danny trembled.

Lyds couldn't bare to answer him. The eyes she'd previously adored, and spent every lifetime gazing into, were staring at her, demanding answers she couldn't provide, and suddenly they felt like blackholes, tugging at her every whim; she couldn't say a word, if she did, she wasn't sure if she'd ever be able to stop. The force of the black holes would tear their way through her, and a dozen truths would fall into the stars for all of eternity.
