SEVENTEEN - "THEN... CAN I LOVE YOU?"

"She's mine."

The creature reared its mangled heads, hands still gripping the chainsaw and pulling Lydia's jaw open, yellowed and white eyes staring back at Beth through the shadows.

"Yours?" It shrieked with laughter. A sickening combination of both Ellie and Bridget's voices escaped it, eyes turning on their son and brother. "Mine."

"Mine..." The woman shot back. Amusement laced her every word.

She was done.

Beth Bixler was fucking done. She was sick and tired and fucking angry. The demon, the spirit, whatever it wanted to fucking call itself, had tried to take everything from her, taken her niece and sister, and almost succeeded at taking her nieces and nephew, even her unborn child; she was dead on the inside. Just as well as it was, but her anger, her need for revenge was sickeningly alive, and so it was that part of her that reached up from the depths of her soul and with its ugly fist grasped the gun, aiming the end right at the centre of Ellie Bixler's bleeding skull.

"Come get some." She spat.

Finally. At the risk of Lydia's life, it made its move, and it threw the chainsaw as it hard as it could right at Beth's head. Danny was with her in a second, there to take the weight and catch her fall, taking him to the ground with her much to the dismay of his ankle, but his pain would've been minuscule in comparison to what it would mean to lose his Aunt. The person who in more ways than one had shaped him into the person he was. He would always look up to her, always want to protect her, and it seemed as the monster took ahold of his Aunt's ankles he'd have to prove the latter once more.

"Beth!" He yelled, pulling her hard beneath the arms, in a tug of war with the beast, fighting it away from the grim reality of where it was trying to take her.

The wood chipper. The very same one attached to the back of Mr Fonda's truck, the one he used for his tree surgeries, used for shredding the dead wood or loose branches. The same one he could suddenly picture his Aunt being pulled through and ground to a pulp within. The same one Lyds and Kassie and He could meet their fate upon too.

It couldn't be possible.

But the possibility only rose as Ellie gave a harsh tug at her once sister's feet and Bridget pulled the lever labelled 'on'.

"Danny!" Beth cried out as he feverishly pulled her back into him with all his might.

The machine whirred to life, biting and chomping at the very tip of Beth's shoe. The woman was clever and managed to avoid the mouth of the chipper, instead kicking her feet upwards towards the hands of her attackers, but together they were stronger than herself, stronger than Danny, and after another harsh pull her shoe finally met the teeth.
