I hung up the phone for the last time and looked over at Jeongin. The little boy must've have gotten tired from crying. He was laying near the fire place sleeping soundly as the flames lit up the dark room.
I walked over to him and pulled the blanket fully over his body sympathy tugged at my heart again. I wouldn't know what to do if me and my parents were separated.
I didn't want to go to sleep just yet.
I found the remote for the fireplace and turned on the news. I tried to change the channel a couple of times but couldn't find anything that was interesting.
I didn't want to fall asleep yet, I didn't want to dream.
I laid back against the couch and tried to fight off sleep.
It didn't work, it was a losing battle, my eyes slowly closed and darkness suddenly filled my mind.
When I woke up in the morning Jeongin was no longer there.
I jumped up from the couch and looked around, I could see the fridge was wide open and the floor was covered in cookie crumbs.
Jeongin was sitting on the floor eating milk and cookies.
He looked up at me with wide eyes and I knew he was guilty of something.
"Jeongin? Why are you eating cookies ,you're not supposed to be up this early eating cookies."
As expected he looked at me with his bubbly eyes and said nothing.
I walked over to him and saw that he had made a little pile of the crumbs.
I signed " why don't we just go out and eat breakfast?" I smiled
And for the first time I could see he was genuine. When he smiled he showed all his teeth and he nodded his head constantly.
"Great let's go" I grabbed my keys and phone, and I looked back at Jeongin.
I Held out my hand to see if he would hold it again. He was hesitant at first but eventually he grabbed it and squeezed it tightly. We walked out the door and to my car.
I turned to look at him and sighed. He was staring up at the sky and his eyes seemed to be sparkling. I wondered what he was looking at. I looked up and saw nothing but the blue sky with the sun rising over the horizon. He was mesmerized by it and I could only watch him.
His small face lit up with joy, and his smile reached his eyes.I thought I could get used to this.
I shook my head, and looked away. I needed to focus on the task at hand, which was finding breakfast for Jeongin.
The car ride was quiet, it was almost too quiet. I started thinking of what to say but nothing seemed to work, nothing seemed right.
I tried to talk to him but he wouldn't reply, he just stared out the window.
I pulled the car into a dinning area and got Jeongin out the car.
Jeongin looked at the building in front of him and I watched as his face lit up once again.
We went inside and took a booth near the back, the place was empty except for a few people here and there. A lady came around her mid fifties came to our table. Assuming she was the waitress, I smiled and greeted her. She then looked to play with Jeongin. She put her hands on her knees " Hi there little one . What's your name?"
Jeongin looked at her with wide eyes and opened his mouth to say something but nothing came out. He looked at me for help.
I told the waitress his name and I could see her smile falter for a second.
"I'm sure he's not yours but he is very smart I just know it." I faked smiled , I had no idea why I felt so offended. She was telling the truth he wasn't mine. For obvious reasons, my skin color.
She walked away and I let out a breath I didn't know I was holding.
She came back a couple of minutes later with two menus and a couple of waters.
She sat them down in front of us and handed us a menu. I opened up the menu and saw a lot of fancy words I didn't understand.
I looked over the menu to Jeongin and watched him read through it like a pro. He put the menu down and looked at me. I could tell he was excited. The lady came back a few minutes later and asked us what we wanted.
I looked at Jeongin and he looked at me. He looked like he was thinking about something.
I told the waitress what I wanted and she looked at Jeongin.
Jeongin looked at the lady with big eyes and said something that made me flinch.
He had said " I want eggs and bacon please!"
Tears formed in my eyes as I didn't expect him to talk. The lady laughed and took our order to the back.
I looked back at Jeongin and smiled.
He smiled back at me and started to play with the salt shaker in the middle of the table.
