I turned around to look at the woman beckoning on me, she rushed and stopped in front of me and she asked

"young girl, didn't you put your pad properly?"

I looked at her in confusion as I didn't know what she meant,

She told me that I was stained, I was more confused as I tried to look at myself only to discover the blood stain on my skirt,

I tried to remember if I had cut myself in the bus,

when I didn't remember any, I looked back at her immediately after which she understood my confused look and took me in her car,

I was afraid at first but she assured me, she drove me to her house.

When we got to her house, she helped me clean up and taught me how to put on a pad properly; she walked me to the dining table and told me to wait for her,

she came back with food and some pain relievers, thanking her profusely as I had not eaten that much food since I left my uncle's house."

Joan paused, gathered herself, took some water and started again

"She asked me about my family and I told her what happened and that I was living under the bridge and she felt sorry for me and promised to take care of me,

her house was a 4 bedroom flat, and she had two daughters staying in separate rooms, so there was an extra room for me.

I stayed there until it was night when her husband and children came after they had eaten dinner,

she told them about me and they were surprisingly very happy to meet me, then she surprised them and called me downstairs.

When they saw me, they were quiet for a little time and started to welcome me, since that day; they saw me as their own family, when I and the girls finished secondary school,

we had just written WAEC and we had all topped all our mates that wrote with us, only that I was higher than the two girls,

we came home and told them the good news, the parents celebrated their children, I remembered that I was not their child,

I sat in the corner and I was crying, just then the mother remembered me and came closer to me, picked up my result and looked through it,

She exclaimed my result was even higher than her children's own.

The father and daughters came closer to also see and it was true, they apologized and celebrated us, took us out, took pictures,

they got us our first phones ever and we all had a good time.

A week later, The husband and wife called me to beg me that they don't have enough money to sponsor all three of them to university

but they would get a job for me in a company as a receptionist, when I was dismissed,

I had mixed feeling that I wouldn't be sitting down idle at home but I wouldn't attend university for now so I took it in good faith.

I started my job in a law firm but as a receptionist as I didn't know anything about law...
