Prompt credit: interrupted fern on tumblr (bus AUs)

"Well, folks, we're waiting for a couple of stragglers. Make your way over to your seats, please, and we'll be off in about five minutes."
As soon as the intercom crackled off, people began shoving bags in the overhead bins or under their chairs or requesting seat switches and otherwise crowding the bus with motion—so I couldn't see my seat partner until he was right in front of me.
The guy flopped into the seat next to me, nearly hitting me with his designer backpack. The black leather and gold embroidered logo perfectly matched the self-assured way he immediately pulled out his phone and began typing away. I didn't mean to be nosy, but I couldn't ignore the 100+ text notifications that completely obscured his default iPhone wallpaper.
The PA system turned on again. "Welcome aboard the Pledis Express, the best, worst, and only overnight bus system on this side of the Bumzu river. We're headed straight for Ador with a rest stop every hour. In case of emergency-"
The bus driver paused as the bus doors wooshed open for a harried looking woman. "Looks like we have another passenger coming into the bus."
My bus seatmate grumbled something, shaking his head. I thought he might have been talking to me.
"Did you say something?" I asked, politely.
He shot me an annoyed glare, as if I'd just stepped on his foot or brushed against him on a crowded street. But, I hadn't been rude, so I didn't back down.
"Onto," he said, louder. "The passenger is coming onto the bus. Not 'into.'"
I raised an eyebrow. "Into is right. She's stepping into the bus."
"But she's stepping onto its chassis. There's something she's stepping onto."
"There's a roof over our heads and walls on all four sides. She's stepping into the bus like stepping into a room."
The guy rolled his eyes as the bus made a rumbling noise and began to move. "But 'into' doesn't make as much sense. She has to go up steps. You wouldn't say you're going to step into the second floor."
"You wouldn't say you're stepping onto a car."
The bus began to make its way onto the highway, swinging streetlamps across my seatmate's fervent face.
"Yes, you could step onto a car. They also have a chassis. But, I see what you mean in this scenario. You would enter a car and immediately sit down. When you enter a bus, you're still standing up!"
"What's the difference?" I said, exasperation and adrenaline beginning to course through my veins. "They're both vehicles!"
"'What's the difference?' The action in which you enter a car or bus is completely disparate! This is literally apples and oranges." He was beginning to talk faster and faster, nearly rapping the fruit names together.
