! TW: Minor car crash, unsafe driving practices !
***
I careened around a street corner, ignoring the noisy honks from the horns of annoyed drivers. They were all probably cursing me out, but with my eyesight so blurred by tears, I couldn't tell. [please practice safe driving; if your vision is impaired, pull over and wait until your eyesight has returned]
His voice still echoed in my head.
"Kanghee, I'm sorry. Please, Kanghee, I didn't mean it; I still love you."
I took another sharp turn to the right, nearly grazing the sidewalk. Flames still boiled in my stomach.
"No you're not," I muttered. "You will never be sorry."
Red light flared in front of me and I braked so suddenly my back wheels caught air. The scene closed with one final line that broke me inside.
"If you know the truth, why are you lying to yourself, Kanghee?"
That was it. I had to get away.

It was one of those summer evenings, the kind where the air is just beginning to break from the stuffy heat of the afternoon into the coolness of night. Dusks like that were one of the most enchanting and unexpected things about Pledis. Just a few hours away from the bustling city, buried deep within a small mountain range, was a slice of peace and quiet. In the daytime, it was lush and green, dotted with bursts of rainbow blooms. At night, stars shone as they could not in the city.
During this particular evening, on the cusp between wet spring and humid summer, the crickets and cicadas were beginning to wake up and serenade the deep blue sky with their scratchy songs. Between the darkening mountains, orange burned bright on the sky's edge: a last farewell from the sun before tomorrow.
Above me and my car, stars were just beginning to show, like pearly tears on flawless skin. Like my tears.
Unbidden, the scene played out in front of my eyes again:
"I'm sorry, Kanghee-"
"No you're not." Tears fell erratically, like rain during a thunderstorm. I was angry, heartbroken, despairing, but unforgiving. "You will never be sorry."
My eyes stung. "Nope. Don't even think about it," I told myself. I was here to have a good time.
Every year on May 26 [Seventeen's debut date], there was a massive holiday in order to celebrate the great revolution of some ancient Pledis presidents. I don't know the details. I never paid attention in history. But either way, there was a fireworks show that could be seen from just about everywhere in Pledis, but the view was most exquisite in these mountain ranges. Once upon a time, in ancient childhood, my parents had taken me to a campground to see them and now I was on my way back to that childhood memory in the hopes that it would help me find some peace of mind.
