Chapter 16-

They were back. Finally back.

It had taken 2 more days... 2 days since Fain's death... but they had made it, safe and sound. Kinda. Actually, right now, they were celebrating. Celebrating the arrival of their tired but happy bodies at the new campsite. They had been partying since 4:00 in the afternoon, and now it was midnight.

Oh, well, Serenity thought. I haven't been to a good party in a while, anyway.

Everyone was dancing, screaming, eating, bobbing their heads up and down to the music, and being grateful that Trent had allowed them to do this. But by 2:00am, things started toning down. People began dragging themselves to their beds to finally get some rest, and soon, it was just Serenity, Natalie, Trevor, and Reed.

"Whoa... That was SOME party." Trevor exclaimed happily as the four of them headed towards the path that led to their own dorms.

"Yeah, I think my eardrum burst, the music was so loud!" Natalie laughed.

"No, I think it was US!" Reed chuckled and slapped Trevor a high five.

"And if there was beer there, it would've been a LOT worse!" Trevor agreed, returning it.

Serenity rolled her eyes, smiling. "Yes, always you two boys and your beer," she giggled. "What a surprise."

"Yeah, but after all that, I'm SO tired..." Natalie yawned.

"Same," the rest of them agreed as they reached the fork in the path that led to their separate dorms.

They said goodnight and went their own ways, Trevor and Reed to the boy's dorm, and Serenity and Natalie to the girl's.

"Dang, that Serenity chick is HOT." Reed said with a smile.

"Ah, looks like someone has a crush!" Trevor laughed.

"Shut up! She is, right?" Reed folded his arms, waiting for Trevor to agree with him. "Right...?"

"Uh... I guess so..." Trevor muttered.

"You GUESS so? Come on dude, admit it. That chick was on FIRE tonight!"

"Whatever."

"No, seriously! She was dancing like there was no tomorrow!"

"Dude, I get it. You like Serenity," Trevor sighed, his mood changing completely. "Big whoop."

"Come on, dude. What's your problem?" Reed asked, taken aback and slightly annoyed by Trevor's mood change. "Lighten up!"

"It's just... I had a girlfriend back home." Trevor admitted sadly. There was silence for a long time as both boys stopped on the path.

"And the one item you brought...?"

"Was a picture of her."

The silence continued to stretch on, bathing both the lovesick boys in its sad discomfort.

"I'm sorry, man."

And the silence was only broken by one thing. The gunshot.
