I sat the rest of the day in my room thinking about Darian and his general concern for my safety. When I looked into his eyes, I didn't recognize the cold-blooded killer that I thought he would be. But instead, I found what seemed to be a nice man, a kind man.

No. You can't trust him.

I dropped the dagger back on my nightstand which I realized I was clutching tightly to my chest. The hilt was steaming hot. I needed to learn to control these powers. It could become a serious problem very soon if I don't. I was lucky I didn't melt the metal off.

The day went by slowly. Very slowly. Every time I heard footsteps passing by my door, I reached for my dagger, but no one knocked. The only person that came into my room was Julie for my dinner that was brought to me on a tray. Part of me was happy that I didn't have to eat meals with my family anymore. For once I don't have to sit next to Amora or be in front of my whole judgmental family.

After a while though, I learned that being stuck in my room all day was almost just as bad. In fact, it was so boring, I tried using my powers. I know that it was probably the most stupid idea I've ever had, but if I'm ever going to learn control, I'm going to have to start somewhere. I got a bucket of water ready in case something happened. I knew for sure I had some sort of fire powers, but it was different from Clif's powers or Fathers. The flames that were in my hand a couple nights ago were black. How is that even possible? I've never heard of someone having the ability to control black flames before.

I didn't know the first thing about summoning my powers, the only thing I knew is that it happened most when I was angry or afraid. But I wasn't particularly angry or afraid at the moment so I had to come up with a different way to summon the flames. I tried focusing on the flames in my hand again, the black wispy flames that flicked around my fingertips. But, as much as I focused, nothing would happen. I tried summoning them for what seemed like hours but had no results, only failures. I don't understand how I could summon them before without even trying but now I'm having trouble.

Eventually I gave up trying. Every time I failed just made me believe less in my abilities. I should have just waited for Brock to teach me, but I can imagine Brock is busy, especially now that someone just tried to kill him.

I sit there thinking for a moment what life would have been without him. How I would have no one left to help me. No one else really cares for me the way Brock does, and if he died, I wouldn't know what to do with myself.

I made up my mind that I would go to the library tomorrow. If my powers were dangerous like Brock says they are, then I need to start learning about them and if they were ancient, what place would there be better to go to if I wanted to learn about something old.

[Chapter break]

The next morning, my maids brought my breakfast as father said they would and I ate as quickly as possible. I wanted to head to the library bright and early. When I opened the door, it felt as if no one else was living here except me. The halls are quiet and no one was around.

I quickly made my way to the library, very aware of all the sounds coming from around me. I needed to be extra careful walking around now.

When I open the double doors of the library, I am greeted with the highest of shelves completely stacked full of books. The only time I ever get to go here is when my tutor says we can come and during my free time, but now that my lessons have seemed to take a halt, I can come here as often as I like. It has a dome shaped roof made of glass and there are rows upon rows of shelves and some tiny areas with a rug and chairs to read.

I make it all the way there to find a familiar face. Sabrina.

"Hey, Bri!" I called.

Bri turns her head to face me, her expression initially annoyed to be dragged away from her book, but when she sees me, her mouth curves into a smile.
