A/N I think it's time for some more action. I've decided to start making 1-3 part chapters and add some more characters to each chapter. This might be a good change of pace, but if it doesn't work out I might just go back to normal. Tell me what you think about this, I really want some feedback.
My name's May Torres. I live in good 'ole Kansas. At my school, most people worry that a tornado's going to come in. Where we're at, tornados are pretty common. I've never thought much of it, but I knew someday something was going to happen. Just the other day, a tornado warning woke everyone up at five. (Not kidding. This actually happened)
I got pretty scared then, but I decided to trust that God wouldn't kill us all. Nothing bad happened here, just a little bit of wind.
One weekend, I was chilling on my couch watching "Dance Moms". Abby had just finished yelling at the girls for a stupid reason. I was obsessed with the show. But the someone knocked on the door. I jumped to my feet quickly and trudged to the door, opening it wide to see who was there. I fully expected it to be one of my friend's little brother. He used to ding-dong-ditch us all the time.
Instead, it was a boy with blond hair, one I'd never seen before. "Uh, hi," He said shyly. "I'm your new neighbor."
"Oh, hello," I smiled. "I thought I saw a family moving in."
"Is there a way I could steal a cup of sugar?" He asked. "My boyfriend and I are making cookies, but we don't have enough."
"Of course," I said, opening the door wider to let him in. "Follow me."
I led him to the kitchen and measured out a cup of sugar. Handing it to him, he thanked me and turned to leave.
"Wait, is there a way I could get something in return?" I grinned.
"Like what?" He asked me.
"Do you have baking cocoa?" I asked. "I'm making a chocolate cake for my dad's birthday. But we ran out, and my mom's too busy to go to the store in her free time just to get some."
He nodded. "Sure, just come with me."
We walked into his house, which was pretty big. Inside was a short, black haired boy. He wore black clothes, and he was scrolling through something on his phone. Looking up, he locked eyes with me. "Hey, Will, who's this?"
"This is the neighbor, uh-" Will started.
"May," I said gladly. "It's nice to meet you both."
"I'm Nico," Nico waved at me.
"Neeks, where's the cocoa at?" Will asked him. "The baking cocoa."
"Uh, I think it's in a box somewhere," Nico jumped off the countertop, which for some reason he was sitting on, and started rummaging through a few boxes.
"This might take a while," Will sighed.
"Don't worry, I'll help," I started helping them out, finding the cocoa. They mostly have kitchen supplies in the boxes, so I wasn't invading any of their privacy.
"Where did my mother put the baking ingredients?" Will muttered. "Geez."
"Your mom packed all this up?" I asked cluelessly.
Will shook his head. "She just helped us pack some things up. Since neither of us packed up the kitchen ingredients, I'm assuming my mother packed it up."
"She's good at packing things up, then," I muttered jokingly. "I can't find it anywhere."
Suddenly, a big gust of wind came in and shook the windows. Nico and Will didn't seem bothered by it, but I certainly was.
"It's just wind," Nico scoffed.
"That's not just wind," I gulped. "Look at the sky. That's no regular thunderstorm."
Nico and Will gathered by the window and tried to understand what I was saying.
"Where did you guys used to live?" I asked them.
"New York," Nico shrugged.
"Oh," I smiled weakly. "The sky's turning different colors. The wind is blowing hard. That's not a regular storm. That's not regular wind. That might be a tornado."
"Tornado?" Will scowled. "That can't be. It's just wind."
An alarm sounded, nearby, confirming my predictions.
"Was that a...tornado siren?" Nico shivered.
I nodded. "Y'all might want to get to the basement. Can I come with?"
Will pulled us all into the basement of the place, which looked pretty nice. They had food down there already, but we sat on the couch uncomfortably. Nico looked a little scared, so he and Will cuddled for a while. I didn't mind, since they probably hadn't experienced tornadoes before.
I scrolled through the weather app on my phone, trying to find out what was happening. There was a tornado warning for my county, including others.
Tapping Will on the shoulder, I showed him the phone screen. "See? Tornado."
"You're right," He sighed. "We've never experienced a tornado before. Will everything be alright?"
"Yeah," I nodded. "We'll be fine. Our county is going to be safe."
We all sat down there for a few more hours, but nothing happened.
"When can we go back upstairs?" Nico whimpered. "This thing better not be a prank."
"It's not," I breathed. "Sometimes these take a long time. Maybe we should all just take a nap, or something."
The power went out just after I said that.
"Well, maybe the lights want us to go to sleep too."
"Will-" Nico hugged his boyfriend closer, and they hugged each other close to whisper condolences to one another.
"It'll be fine, Nico," He told his boyfriend. He glanced at me. "Right?"
