A/N This comment from my fourth chapter reminded me of something that's been going around my school lately. Two people in my personal friend group are really good friends but the 'popular kids' have been calling them gay and acting all homophobic and shit. I want ya'll's opinion on the matter, if you can relate or something. The 'popular kids' are also some of my closest friends. What am I supposed to do?
As a teenager, I had the tendency to butt my head into matters it didn't belong in. I'd eavesdrop on other kids' conversations and record them for my school-wide blog, consent of no consent necessary.
I was 16 in my Sophomore year, typing maniacally like a hacker before first period began. My best friend and partner-in-crime, Jesse, held her fuchsia notebook and ballpoint pen in her hands.
"Jade, I found the best news to add to the blog." Her voice was exuberant and vile, hissing snakes beneath her tongue. "It involves Laura and Jane."
"Who are they again?" I questioned, tapping my fingers lightly on the keys while adding their names to the waiting list for my new posts. "I swear, I've heard rumors about them before."
"Jane's knee is busted, so Laura has been helping her walk around lately," Jesse continued, maddeningly swinging her pen around in her right hand. "Have you seen them?"
"Oh, of course-" I remarked, the vision of those two specific girls flashing through my head like a slideshow. "I remember them. How long has it been that way?"
"Doesn't matter-" Jesse urged, shoving the notebook onto my lap. "Read what I've collected so far."
My eyes spread across the page as the words flowed through my head. Colors painted against my sight while I visualized the rumors.
"Huh, this'll be good." My fingers danced across the keyboard while dopamine surged through my veins. "The school will just eat this up."
Jesse grinned. "They sure will. Laura and Jane will be so pissed."
"What are you guys talking about?" My friend, Hannah, poked her head into the cubicle Jesse and I hung out in. "I heard you mention them."
"Yeah, we're talking about the rumors," Jesse replied carelessly, a malicious side-smile glued to her lips. "They're wild, don't you think?"
"Sure-" Hannah scowled. "Do you support LGBTQ?"
"Of course not," I triggered, crossing my arms at my chest menacingly. "It's just an excuse to not be considered weird. They're all the same. Remember what happened to Jake, that one gay kid from eighth grade?"
Hannah shuddered, rolling her eyes. "I absolutely hated him. Of course, nobody mentioned it, but we all remember him confessing. Everyone pretended he hadn't said anything."
"It all came back to him when that other kid came along," Jesse added. "What was his name again? Octavius? It sounded really dumb."
"Close-" I laughed. "It was Octavian. On the school blog, someone wrote about him."
