5 minutes before noon, Tara and I leave our rooms and go to find the dining room. A butler waits at our door and takes us through the maze of halls to the dining room. The social worker is already seated there. I sit down and look around the table. You won't imagine the food on the table. It's more than the feast we have for Thanksgiving.
"Um, Ms.., eh" I struggle to find her name to ask a question.
"Call me Anne," she says with that big smile.
"Ms. Anne, what is going on," I say not missing a beat.
"I guess it's time then," she sighs. "Okay, well, as you guys know your parents have been arrested."
Tara drops her fork, "What? What did they do?"
"They were hacking things. I am not sure why and I am not sure how, but all evidence leads to them being hackers."
"This is wrong! They did nothing!" I yell at her as if it was her fault.
"They were bad people, and did bad things, so they were arrested," she tells me more sternly.I get up from the dining table, heading straight for a bathroom. Once I am in the bathroom I lock myself in there and let it all out. I am brave I try to tell myself, but I know that is not true. For the sake of my sister, I try to be brave all the time, but sometimes I forget.
I must have wept in there for hours. As soon as one cry was over, I thought about it again and the crying started again. After a while, I hear a soft knock on the door.
"Kayne, you don't have to hide the tears, your sister is not here right now," Ms.Anne whispers.
I open the door and run to my room. I didn't feel like crying now because something was going on. My mom and dad would have never hacked anything. I needed to go back to my home. I needed to go see my parents. I don't know much but I do know one thing for sure - Ms. Anne is in on whatever is going on.
"Tara, pack a spare pair of clothes, we're going back home," I whisper to her.She nods and goes to finds some spare clothes. By the time she comes back I had a plan. First we leave right when Ms. Anne goes to the bathroom or at least leaves to go somewhere at dinner. We leave through our window and run to the bus stop. I will pay for a bus that will take us all the way home. The money will be my old lunch money, which is still in the bag that I brought from my home. We will go to my house, grab some things, and make our way to the police station to sort out everything. I know that this sorting out business is not as easy as it sounds but I will at least get to see my parents.
